2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission steering box question

curious if a steeringbox off of a 2wd can be used in a 4wd, I know all first generation trucks share the same box but not sure about 2nd gens.

All of the parts manuals and catalogs I've seen don't show a different gearbox for 2wd versus 4wd. They use the same.

Agreed. When I got my box from redhead, they didnt ask me whether or not it was 2wd or 4wd, just whether it was a 1500 or heavy duty

How did you know your steering box was shot? On my 01 with about 100k miles, I cannot see any play at the box or pitman arm, but there is a little play at the joint between the pitman arm and drag link.
I am starting to see a little wander. I have the 3rd gen retro track bar.

I determined the box was more than likely gone because after rebuilding whole front end except for the box the steering had a lot of memory in it still. Also, larger tires wear it out prematurely like on my old ride. My truck was at 180k when I replaced it
