Having problems with my '97 4 x 4 steering shaft. Removed it to look and found "U" joints were good but it was the telescoping joint that was worn. As per suggestions from the Product section I looked at the Flaming river and Borgeson replacements. They both use the DD type sliding joint.
My question is this, why is this sliding joint needed??
I realize the obvious; it must collapse to allow it to be installed and removed. Also some steering shafts have a collapsible section in case of a frontal collision to protect driver's chest.
Does the shaft actually use this slip joint as it rotates because of the "U" motion which cause the shaft to lengthen and shorten?? I've looking at several cars and they do not have a slip joint but a "U" joint at one end; a "rag" joint at the other and a solid shaft in the middle.
