Hi guys,

To make a long story short, Rob Hanson just drug me out of the snow. I was buried up to my fuel tank so it took some effort and we broke my tow strap doing it. But in the process I bent the steering stabilizer up.

When I bought the new one the salesman told me not to bother with the acordian boot that goes over the piston. He said it doesn't do anything and just premotes rust. Is he right?

PS Who makes a good tow hook?

I've always felt that boots do just as good of job keeping dirt and moisture in as they do out. Unless you want to take the time to clean and air them out frequently you are probably better off without them.

..... on the other hand, the accordian urethane boots have breather holes which will not trap moisture.

However, even though the breather holes are small, they could in all likelyhood let a very small amount of water in if the holes are not oriented properly.

I have had dozens of high performance shocks over the last 20+ years of off-roading and in all that time I have never seen foreign material enter through the protective accordian boot and cause problems... of any kind.

PS: hey AC, Rob told me all about your little adventure the other day. It's nice to have good friends you can count on isn't it? Rob is one he!!uva great guy!!!!

I use wire cutters to cut a small ^ in each of the bottom pleats after installing with sturdy tie wraps. Never had rust or dirt problems. I do the same thing to shocks on the bottom pleat.
