Just for some back ground. I have a Rome 475-Ca 4x4 tractor which is powered by a Cat 3408 diesel and has an allison 6 speed automatic trans. The tractor was made by Rome plow company in Cedartown GA but has not been made for 20 years now as they were lossing $100k on each one made. It is made of off the shelf components: Cat motor, Allison Trans, Cat 980 wheel loader axels, Commercial Sherring Hydraulics, etc.
Now for the problem::: My steering quit. The steering wheel goes round and round. You can spin it practicly. I called Rome and talked to Greg Wilkerson in engineering who told me some of the early tractors had nylon seals in the steering cylinders and when they blew the oil would bypass and do that. so I pulled the cylinders and tore them down and found they had the new style 4) 1/4 inch thick steel piston rings instead. No oil bypass here. The tractor has a Ross Hydra steering motor. oil goes from the pump to filter to relief valve, to brake valve to steering valve to steering cylinders. I bypassed brake valve so it is eliminated. I then traded lines from the steering half of the pump to the hydraulic side so that eliminated the relief valve and the pump. still the same. anyone know anything about these ross steering motors?? any suggestions. ??? any help would be appreciated. Can't steer it at all. tired of getting a hydraulic oil bath taking things apart.
