My 2002 2500 is starting to be sluggish when towing heavy loads. I noticed this a few month ago when towing our 5th wheel (@9000#'s), hauling 150 square bale's of hay and yesterday when hauling my bass boat. The truck has @ 280K miles, the VP was replaced at @ 90K miles. I have had gauges in my truck the entire time I have owned it and never had a lift pump failure. I replaced the stock lift pump with a FASS that is located near the fuel tank, removed all the banjo bolts and installed 1/2" fuel line from the FASS to the fuel filter canister. It maintains 15 psi at idle and 12 at WOT. The truck still builds 20# of boost at the intake so I can eliminate a torn or busted boots on between the turbo and the intake manifold where the boost gauge is tapped. I am suspecting the VP is getting tired and may need to be replaced. The truck is not displaying any codes on the dash using the cycle the key method. The truck runs great, starts easy, still has a puff of black smoke at startup, no miss, it's just down on power when towing.

Is there a way to diagnose a bad VP pump without just throwing parts at it? Can the pump be removed from the truck and tested if so does anyone have any suggestions who in the Houston area that can do this? Has anyone experienced anything similar if so what fixed your problem?
