My 99 wont start..if I short cycle the key and then it just cranks but no fire. Im stuck on the road trying to figure it out...its done it before and if I let it sit for a couple hours it will start...has something to do with short cycling the key though.any help is welcome as i am cuurently stranded at a fuel station blocking a pump.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? Bump the key and listen for the lift pump to run. If no fuel pressure gauge you need to verify lift pump pressure before the injection pump. Easiest place without tools is probably the drain on the fuel filter. If good fuel pressure there try cracking a fuel injector at the head loose and crank the engine. You should have high pressure fuel there.
That's about all you can check without a scanner to pull up any CELs you may have.

I have aftermarket (raptor) lift pump...no gauge but have fuel pressure to injector pump verified by cracking line...tried cracking lines to injectors to check fuel and it just dribbles out...seems i should have more pressure there. Inj. Pump is fairly new blue chip unit.

It has done it before and will more than likely turn over after it sits for a few hours...always does this if i accidentally short stroke the ignition key. Weird

Short Stroke the Ignition key??? Do you mean bump the starter? That will cause the lift pump to run for 28 or so seconds, which would indicate a over pressure issue with your fuel pressure. You really need to get a fuel pressure gauge installed. I have heard that getting into the mid 20's is bad and can cause starting problems! SNOKING

I'd try pouring some water on top of injection pump like Mule suggested. These types of failures are rather rare from BC but are possible now that they are offering pumps with used fpcm like other vendors do.

I want to thank you guys for the help... I called my wife to come get me and I pushed the truck to the side and left it . I will go back later and see if it starts . Is pouring water on the vp44 meant to cool it off? I don't think its heat related as it will do it when cold if key is short cycled. I think the overpressure is a possibility , I have a temporary gauge that I can install and check that . THX again , Rich

The control unit is bolted to the inj. pump, and you can't replace it, it gets hot , pouring water on it cools it down, my 2001 did this a couple of times to me and water worked after a few minutes it started up and i drove it home, i did have to replace the v-44 though, Monte

Well I let it sit for 7 hrs . Meanwhile I went to my sons 8th grade graduation ceremony . Afterwards I went back to my truck and it fired right up and I drove it home. I am going to check fuel pressure tomorrow and see if it is indeed above 20 psi . Again I think we could rule out heat because it will do it on a cold morning if I short cycle the key.

by short cycling the key I mean ... letting the key go before the engine starts. If I make a conscious effort to make sure the engine fires before letting go of the key I have no problem. does that make sense?

Try pouring cold water on top of vp44.

I never figured that was a good idea. I would think the aluminum pump case would shrink faster than the steel internal parts and seize or at least score some pieces and parts. Same thing with a car wash, I would not wash a hot Cummins engine.

Had to do it several times to get home once ,I was 300 miles from home, injection pump was still good, it was the control unit and they won't sell it by itself, have to buy the whole unit as a package

If it might be ignition switch, my question is "do you adjust the steering wheel often? I recall that short wires to the switch thru the column caused intermittent ignition switch problems exasperated by frequent adjustment of the steering wheel. Start with the cheap and simple hopefully.

I don't doubt the logic of cooling off the computer , and I would try it in a pinch to get home but ... my particular issue is not heat related , it will do it on a cold start . What triggers my issue is bumping the starter with the key without starting the engine ... this was never a problem before( i've owned this truck since new) ... if I missed the start on the first turn of the key it would start on the next try . Since upgrading my lift pump( Raptor) and my injection pump ( blue chip special X ) it will fail to start if I don't get it right on the first try . I am working today but I plan on checking the lift pump for overpressure and then I will explore other electrical options after that ... feel free to continue to discuss this here but I am no longer STRANDED (sorry about spelling in post title ) Once I have more info I will follow up with a thread in the 24v engine discussion forum. Thanks again , Rich
