i was driving along and my transmission got stuck in 4 th gear and it will not come out. has my getrag finally took the long nap and never going to wake up or is there a simple fix? :(

Welcome to my world It will be ok. The forks and shifter are warn prety good so if you don't shift perfictly square the shifter will slide by a fork. Take the snapring out, pull out the shifter, get a heavy screwdriver, and look in the hole the center fork should be forward. Use the screwdriver to pop it back to center. I have had to do this 4 or 5 times usually at midnight.

syuvk in gear

I only have 400k so have not experienced the problem as Phillip explains but I am aware that my shifter is getting some slack in it. I have worked on a couple with "stuck in 4th gear" that required a few parts for repair. Even if it requires removal and repair, you should be able to go with reasonable costs. Try the screwdriver first. Trannys do jamb. Permanent fix for this will require some parts in the cap.

Depending on how you want to fix, you can trim a large hole in the floor and take the cap off. Otherwise the transmission will have to be out. If you plan carefully how to cut out the floor, you can get a similat part (but slightly larger) from a salvage truck and install that with screws. A few years back the manufactures provided a cover like that in the floor. About the only thing you can do through such a cutout is work on the cap. It also makes removal of the transmission easier if that is required.

That stuck in gear thing started hapening to me at 150000 on both my 5 speeds and also my friends 93 4x4 dually 5 speed. We pulld his trans out and put a new fork in. I think it was 60 bucks from dodge. Or maby he got it on line I cant rember. Don't drive around with your hand on the shifter that causes the forkes to wear and the gap between them gets biger and biger. They are aluminum.
