And I mean stuck there.

When I tried to downshift this morning it wasn't happening. I pulled a little harder and the shifter went into what would normally be the Neutral position but it is still in 5th gear. It won't go into 5th gear position, nor will it go into any other gear.

Tryin to launch in 5th gear is not a fun thing but it did get me home.

Anyone heard of this?

It would have to be something in the shift rails/forks to be in neutral position wise but still be in 5th. However, something could be locked up that caused that problem when you tried to force it. The shift fork for 5th/reverse is in the tailshaft of the transmission - so you can look at that without removing the transmission. You could have sheared the roll pins attaching the shift fork to the rail. There's two roll pins attaching the shift fork that connects to the 5th/reverse shift hub - there's also roll pins connecting the shift forks inside the transmission, but you could inspect the outside one pretty easily. Just unbolt the tailshaft from the back of the transmission and pull it off. You'll see the 5th/reverse shift fork right there and if you row the shifter back and forth you should see the shaft that's coming out of the case and goes through the shift fork (about 1. 25" in diameter) move fore and aft. If that is moving and the shift fork isn't then your problem is out there. If that shaft isn't moving then the problem is inside.

I'm planning on pulling the tail section off Friday. See if my problem is there. If not, the whole thing's coming out.

Bill, yes sir it works fine.

Well, that would eliminate the input bearing, master & slave cylinders, & pressure plate- guess you broke the transmission. Could it have anything to do with the assembly that was broken last time? Mebbe it's time to go up to Ft. Worth? Let me know if you need help with it.

Curtis. . I'm betting you lost fifth and when you forced the shift you bent/broke the shift linkage... sounds like a trip to Standard with parts in a box for inspection to me

ON EDIT. . while your there do me a favor and ask them what a total top cover cost is... when I wrecked Ol' # I one of the things that happened is the shift tower on the top cover broke/ cracked about an inch down the wall of the tower... I want to use this transmission in my CJ7 with the stroker motor

I guess I'm the luckiest guy around. :D  :D

transmission is fine, onw of the spring loaded metal tabs in the 5th gear syncro assembly was hanging up. I might have pu it in 180* off when I put it back together last time.

The shifter is also fine, when I pulled it out of 5th position, it just jumped over the shifter for tab and was just stuck in the wrong spot.

Everything is fine with the transmission. :D :) :D
