Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Stuck in limp mode (long)

Thought I might share this with everyone incase someone else runs across this problem. Customer brings us 99 24v stuck in limp mode. This happened one week after he had the trans built. We check it no codes but has a dead lift pump. Keep in mind this thing will barely pull itself. Just when you decide you have seen it all you get that humbling experience, this was mine. Below I will list the parts I changed, going from educated guesses to plan ole shooting in the dark.



1. lift pump

2. Vp44

3. Ecm

4. PCM

5. APPS

6. Map sensor

7. cam sensor

8. crank sensor

9. not sure what else



At this point the poor customer is scared of getting billed for all this installing and uninstalling of parts. So I tell him you pay for the part that fixes it and I'll eat the labor. At this point I send it back to the transmission shop for him to check his work. He lets me know real quick "there's nothing wrong with my transmission" blah blah blah. I am sure it is the transmission so we decide to put the DTT transmission out of my truck in it. While we are deciding when to do this we adjust the transmission kickdown cable which that horses patoot didn't even adjust properly. Guess what that fixed it, I didn't know a transmission cable out of adjustment would do it, but it will.

My Dad once told me that if you have a problem with something the place to start looking is the last thing you messed with before the problem started.

That sounds right to me. Not the cable making the truck run horrible, looking at the last thing YOU messed with, usually where the problem is.

I once had a little old lady bring here mid-fifties buick to us on the back of a tow truck. It just stopped she said, poped the hood pulled a wire, got spark. Took off the air cleaner no fuel. Fuel guage showed 1/2 a tank, changed the fuel filter, nada. blew out the fuel line, nada. Time to pull the tank, removed the drain plug, yup you guessed it no fuel. Called the old lady, she said oh that fuel guage has not worked in years... ... ... ... lesson learned check the basics and never trust the last people to have the vehicle running.

BOY - I just wish that this was a GM site! I am in process of our '96 'Burban with same situation.



Looking at a long block and it also looks like the torque convertor must took out the transmission at the same time. ???



Had a bad supply wire to umpteen sensors and replaced the 'putor last week. New exhaust the day before that.



We have 290K miles on that bugger - so anything is due - but timing is ??? on this.



Can anybody point me to a Chevy truck site?
