Otherwise stock as far as I know--bought the truck @ auction a few months ago.

Been noticing lately it smokes a good bit when you roll into the throttle on acceleration. Air filter is fine, fuel filter is fine, all the maintenance "stuff" is done.

Kinda dumb when it comes to the CR engines... wondering if they exhibit a good bit of smoke in stock form, or if there's something I need to be looking for?

By "a good bit" I mean it's enough for my 74 year old father to comment about how it looks like his old pumped up 444 Cummins... . it's a cloud for sure.

Is this normal? If not I'd like to fix it, if so I guess I'll just have to deal with it.

Thanks!

Dan

My '07 has smoked some since the day I bought it new. It is enough to stain the rear quarter and bumper within a day or two of wasing it. The '04. 5 does also, but not quite as much. Definately much more than my 2nd gen 24-valve or 1st gen did stock for stock.

Same with my stock '06. If I'm just cruising along empty at highway speeds for some time, then dip into the throttle to pass, it'll smoke quite a bit for about 5 seconds or so. Not sure if this has something to do with the turbo spooling up? Or just cleaning out the system after it's not had to work hard for a while?

If you drive like a normal, sane, responsible person it soots up the CAT and muffler and never works it out. The first time you get after it passing or leaving a stop light it blows all the soot out of the exhaust system.

Every one of them seems to do it to some degree or another.

My truck prior to the smarty would not smoke at all. Just a tiny puff of haze if you stomped on it, only if you rapidly floored it. Build boost then there was no smoke at all. Smarty there is a small puff of smoke same scenario, no smoke if I build boost even with the smarty

The 04. 5 and up to the 6. 7 smoke a fair amount for a stock truck. More that any 98 to 04. This is because of the EPA no2 emissions. Significantly retard timing, the last late injection event and a cam shaft that creates a kind of internal EGR is the cause. A proper cam will practically eliminate it. Advancing the timing will help. The Smarty's timing only setting created quite a bit of smoke for me so I think is does more than just timing ie, changing the fueling curve also. Nothing wrong with a smoking stocker, they all do it. Every late model I see on the road has black rear quarter panel. Thanks EPA.

get rid of the cat and it will quit doing it... Well, actually it doesn't quit, it just doesn't build up in the cat only to get blown out all in one big cloud.

My 03 will only emit a light haze no matter how hard i drive it. under normal driving i never see anything. I have only ever seen it blow a cloud of black once and that was after i got my exhaust put on. I bought it off a friend of mine who runs a pretty modded 03 and i just blew out what he left behind in it. no smoke since.

My '03 leaves a blue haze on the bumper after several hundred miles of highway driving. It will blow out some dust after extended highway driving, but that's it for smoke.

I barely notice my 06 smoking much, only when cold at startup. During nighttime, it is more noticeable with headlights behind you. Still, no where near what my 97 would do.
