AFE Drop-In filter is coming off my truck!

City Diesel & Cool-Collar

Anyone know if people using the fingertouch plug has had any problems. Something I noticed it the factory plugs and superplugs have a machined area just below the gasket instead of threads all the way to the gasket like the fingertouch plug. I thinking we may be running out of threads and the plug is only hanging on by a couple threads...

any thoughts?

I think we may be confusing different products here.

The plug pictured in the middle in the above post is not a Super Plug (manufactured by www.superplug.com ). The above plug (pictured in the middle) is the referred to as "Plug It Right" in the Geno's catalog and is manufactured by a TDR member.

These are two different products which should not be confused.

Currently on Geno's web site I could not find the Super Plug which is pictured in Genos catalog #38.

The Super Plug, as pictured in Genos catalog, threads all the way to the gasket and there is not a machined area.

Gasket / washer

If the problem is the gasket / washer? All my other vehicles use a copper washer on the drain plug. The copper deforms and has always sealed. Every time I do an oil change I change the copper washer. Would the copper washer be better than the the rubber or fiber? Has anyone ever used a copper washer?

I just checked mine, and it was about a half-turn LOOSE! I only have about 1,200 miles on it. I just bougtht it from Geno's and put it in last oil change. I re-torqued it. This is annoying!

I have used the genuine SUPER PLUG for almost 3 years, way before GENO had them. I torque it to 40 Ft#, after 3 oil changes and at least 10k miles , it always stays tight and no leaks.

I'm not sure what I torqued mine to when I installed it, but it was at least 40 ft/lbs. I torqued it to 45 this time. I wonder if a copper washer would stop it from creeping loose.

I have a Super Plug, not the middle one pictured above and it came with a fiber gasket. I found it finger tight after the first oil chage after it's install. I have done two since and it has stayed tight. This has me worried, I will check tomorrow moring before I head out.

Are we on the same page?

The superplug that I got from Geno's has a 1 1/8" head and no flange outside of that. Its about 2 inches long. Does this sound like what everyone else is calling "the superplug"? I went to superplug's web site and my plug look slightly different that the one that they show.

Is this what everyone else has?

ALso should I use the metal rubber "banjo" style sealing washers on this plug? I have a fier washer in there know, which came with the plug.

I just got off the phone with Geno's...

The superplug has not been recalled, they pulled it from the shelves because of too many complaints of leaking and working loose.

My Super Plug had did not come with a fiber gasket. It is rubber and with a steel insert. I have used the same gasket for approx. 10 oil changes and all is good (with the exception of the one mishap).

As already mentioned, it must have something to do with the gasket

Some of you have mentioned the "Super Plug" being the problem plug and some have talked about the plug with the 9/16" hex head. I have the 9/16" head plug that Geno's sold awhile back, in fact it isn't even magnetic, (probably an old version). I believe it is the "Plug It Right" which was made by a TDR member and sold by Geno's.

Could you please clarify, are all the aftermarket plugs coming loose or is it just the "Super Plug"?

Thanks.

I just checked mine, it was tight, 1786 miles since the last oil change. Mine is a super plug from Geno's with a 1" hex head and it came with a fiber gasket. There is a very little bit of sepage (sp?) around it. Mine was finger tight the first time I checked it after it was installed but has been tight the last two times.

I have a super plug that I have not used. I just read these posts and it is very scary. Looking at the picture of the plugs it looks like the problem is the super plug does not have the extra meat at the base of the plug to prevent the gasket from moving. Look at the above picture and the three plugs. The S/P is different from the other two that have metal in the form of threads, and a beveled area on the bottom to keep the plug/gasket from moving. I will call Geno`s tomorrow for a refund. :(

I too called Geno's and got the same answer as the rest of you. They got tired of the complaints and wanted to limit their liability so they cleared them off the shelf. I also called Superplug at the toll free number on their website and it does not work. The site does not have an email contact so I could not email them either to get their end of this story. The fact that they don't have an active phone or an email address is VERY disturbing! I would not be surprised if they go under or bankrupt. Been there and done that with Preluber (which I still have new & in the box unused) and Cepeck Tires (which oh by the way exploded on the rim while I was driving last week) (went to Walmart and got 4 Liberator 285-75 R-16's Load Range D & road hazard for $443) Geno's said they would give me a refund if I wanted. I may just take them up on the offer. It is just not worth the risk of trashing the engine.

Talked to Superplug this morning

And they were aware that Geno's was having problems and suggested pulling the plugs from the shelf until a solution was found. The Superplug folks said that they had only one or two problems with plugs coming loose. I made some suggestions and the guys I spoke with got my name and number and said he would call me back with a follow up. Guess I must have had a case of the fat fingers when I tried to call them yesterday. In any case, they told me to try the plug but make sure I torqued it to 40 ft. /lbs. and observe it frequently with the intial installation. If it started to leak or loose torque, they said they would issue a full refund. I guess the issue now is if the plug does or does not hold the 40ft. /lbs. torgue. I think I will try the plug but check the torque on it daily until I am sure the torque is stabilized and no leaks. I think if they add a thicker torque distributing washer or increase the diameter of the plug bolt head, that would help out with respect to loosing torque if in fact that is what is happening. If they call me back, I will post what they told me. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!
