Is it possible to remove my 6. 7 and have a 5. 9 installed? Preferably one like I had in my '01. I have never been happy with how quiet the new engines are and in 45,000 miles I think my CEL has been on for about 38-40,000 miles. I have had 1 new clutch, several EGR valves, a couple turbos, and too many re-flashes to count. I love Dodge and will stay with Dodge and I think the old 5. 9 engines were far superior. I was told that the vehicle electronics would be incompatable with the 5. 9 engine. Is this true? Can anyone tell me if this can be done?

Thanks.

Anything can be done for the right amount of money.

But it will be far cheaper and easier to sell it and buy a 5. 9.

What kind of CEL problems are you having? How do you use your truck?

I'm afraid I agree - if you loved your 2nd gen 24 valve, I'd sell my truck and buy another 2nd gen. Have you checked the classifieds? :-laf

If it was not for the mega cab I would trade it and find an old one. The thought has crossed my mind more than once but I really want the space the space for when my family is in the truck, I have a 4 and a 6 year old.

As far as the CEL, I have never kept a list. Maybe I should have. My dealer has been very good to me and they are very good with the Cummins engine.

I know it would not be cheap but depending on the how hard it would be and the $$$ I might try it. If Itry it I would keep the truck long term instead of trading it every 4-5 years.

If you found a complete 3rd gen HPCR 5. 9L donor truck including the ecm, sensors, etc. , it would be a strait forward swap, especially with the manual trans. An older VP-44 24-valve would be much more of a stretch. The real issue is not the difficulty of the process, but with what you are going to end up with after you are finished. When you consider that it is only a matter of time that our great state of PA starts emission testing, you are going to have and extremely difficult, if not impossible time keeping the truck inspected since your vin # is going to require your truck to pass based on the 6. 7L specs.

In all, I agree with the others. You would be much better off selling or trading on another truck. From what I've seen of the used truck market locally, clean and well kept 5. 9's are still possible to find with some just comming off lease or with owners trading on 4th gens. However, the late 3rd gen 5. 9's, especially the '06-'07's G56 trucks are still fetching a pretty penny. One of our local dealers just sold a 2006 QC long bed ST 4x4 for $34000. That truck hardly sold for that new.

I have thought of deleating an item or two but have been a little scared to do this. I would hate for something to go wrong with it while I was in Canada fishing earlier this year. I think what I might do is get rid of it and get a '01 or '02 if I can find one. I would love to have one again that has rattle to it. I have alraedy started looking, might call my dealer also.

OK, been thinking of what to do and ideas of looking for a used one has started me looking for a good used one but nothing has turned up yet. Called the dealer today to express my frustration and asked about used. Conversation led to the new ones and they told me the news trucks are for the most part problem free. The trucks with the biggest problems like mine are from '07. They understand my frustration and have been very good to me over the years.

Here is my question, if I trade in for a new one what problems if any might I expect to see based upon my driving? Work, self employed, is only 2. 5 miles away and I drive home for lunch. This makes a total of four 2. 5 mile trips day. Yes, I know this is bad. Through the day I might have to drive to town for my business, another short trip of about 8 miles one way. Volunteer fire fighter and if the pager goes off it is only about 2 miles to the station. I do some towing, trailer can weigh from 2500 to 7500 pounds and these trips can be 30-40 miles to 600-700 miles. This is a snapshot of my driving. I realize my driving is not ideal for a diesel but it is what I like and what I want. Is there anyone out there with my type of driving with a '09 or '10? Not looking for concrete answers, just your personal experiences.

I personally have only had one re-flash and one EGR valve up through 21k miles; at 21k, I've had the H&S DPF Delete and zero problems. I'm at 42. 2k currently.

I would say a deleted 6. 7 is more reliable than a VP44 you don't know the shape of.

As would I.

Bluefalcon, I'm assuming you bought your truck new? Theres certainly something to be said for a truck you bought new; you know EXACTLY what the trucks been through, how its been maintained/cared for, if its been abused, etc. Getting a used truck (thats 10 years old) with a somewhat iffy injection pump, and an old design (things, like suspension parts, are typically upgraded with new models, if you get where I'm going here... ) doesn't necessarily equal the best move.

Yes, for the most part, the 08, and especially 09 and newer trucks, seem to be fairly trouble free. Obviously with the added complexity of the emissions system, theres going to be issues pop up. Goes with the territory...

On a new one, just like yours, the mileage isn't the greatest. However, its still got more power than an 01/02, has a better auto transmission in stock form, and has 10 years worth of updates over the older VP trucks. And its a currrent design, whether that matters. But my 07 looked brand new for 3 years, now with the 2010, even an 09 looks instantly dated...

My vote goes for, either delete your 07, or if you feel so inclined, a deleted 2010

I guess I have to chime in here with my experience with my VP-44 5. 9L. Although my truck only has 46,500 miles, it's never been back to the dealer for anything. It still has the original lift pump (yeah, I can pull it down to 8 PSI, so I'll be changing it out before long), the original VP-44 (never a dead pedal, no surges, just good, reliable performance) and just made a round trip pulling the 5th wheel from Houston to the Grand Canyon and back in July temperatures across Texas, New Mexico and Arizona without missing a beat. In other words, it's been dead reliable ever since I ordered it and took delivery in August 2001.

So, not ALL VP-44 equipped 5. 9L trucks are junk. Although I'll be taking delivery of a 2011 dually next month, it's not because there's anything wrong with my truck - rather, the only reason I'm taking a chance with a new 6. 7L is that I have developed a nerve and muscle problem in my left leg that forces me to move to an automatic-equipped truck.

if you are willing to do your own warranty don't worry about it . do what you want to it. delete all that garbage . the stuff to do it is out there . don't throw it away though if you ever go to sell it you will have to put it back on . I'll bet it's going to run great .

Bluefalcon maybe you just got a lemon. Sorry to hear about all of your problems with the truck. If I were you I'd get a new one. From what I've read in here the last 4 years I've been a TDR member, it seems like luck of the draw: most get a great truck and some end up with a POS.

Not sure what you're doing, but I have an 07. 5 6. 7 with the G56. Manufactured May 2007. All original with no mods and just regular maintenance. I've got 36K miles on it now and haven't had a single CEL. Fuel mileage is finally starting to improve as the Big C gets broken in.

Most of the miles are around town, short trips with occasional towing of a medium sized camper (9,000#) on vacation.

Best truck I've ever owned or driven, bar none.

Bluefalcon, maybe just delete the DPF and other related smog. It would still be an illegal truck with a 5. 9 installed, so just delete the smog, and I'll bet you would like the 6. 7 a whole lot more. :)

AHarris, I am starting to think that maybe I have got a lemon. I love Dodge and will stay with Dodge. Even though I have had bad luck with this one I have not lost my faith in them or Cummins. Another bad one and I might consider getting a Hemi, my wife and I are on our second Durango with a Hemi and they have been great. After talking to the dealer and building them online I might be leaning towards a new one. Oo. Finding a good used one would be tough and I do not want to delete stuff on a 6. 7. I am going to do some more thinking but I know what my truck is worth and I think I could trade up to a new one for a reasonable amount. Dealer said they would be happy to take it in on trade. I might even get an auto so my wife would be happy. She couldn't shift a manual if her life depended on it. :-laf

used diesel truck prices are really high right now. the newer 6. 7's seem to be trouble free. But if you tow within the weight limits for a hemi, definitley go with the hemi. With the cylinder deactivation, my daughter is getting 20+ mpg on the highway in her 1500, 2010 bighorn with hemi. And she has a lead foot. No way to justify the diesel with todays fuel prices, and extra cost of the diesel. That 2010 hemi is a great truck.
