Yep, FA4 and the inherently lower HTHS of XXw30 oils will almost exclusively be synthetic/synthetic blend. Only a matter of time before Cummins goes this route in the 6.7 IMO.

you know I got a feeling Cummins may not go the FA4 route with a legacy engine like the ISB..

lending more credence to the saying " WHEN A DIFFERENCE MAKES NO DIFFERENCE, IS THERE A DIFFERENCE?" LOL

Careful 12V98 is lurking  No as far as I am concerned there is no difference. I did let a bit of this rhetoric on synthetics sway me a bit, but no harm ,no foul .

honestly, the cheapest oil available that meets that CES spec will give good service and never let you down, especially the way most of us drive our truck. the rest of it is just clever marketing. create a need, market the solution.. otherwise most people would run Walmart Supertech and Supertech filters.

I don't think I've ever heard of or seen a sludged up HD engine like the one Mike just posted!
Our fleet runs Dino oil and okay filters on a somewhat aggressive cycle. The drive cycle is idle heavy vocational, and the engine is the horrid Mack MP7 with EPA07 EGR. This one is 9000 hours old, getting injectors and cups.

This is more of what I'm used to seeing.

Nobody (I would hope, nobody) recommends extending oil change intervals with a group 3 "synthetic" oil. These are typically not PAO or ester based oils. They are dino that was put through a process of cracking to make the oil molecule size more consistent. They do not have the additive quantities for extended drain intervals and these base oils do not resist oxidation and thermal decomposition any better than the conventional oil they really are.

I don't use synthetic motor oil because It's cheaper. Dino is good. I did not use synthetic for the first 2 years. My truck was broken in on Dino. But, I have been using synthetic for a little more than 1/2 the life of the truck. Coming up on 5 years this fall. Cummins says a little oil consumption is normal. But I would expect less oil consumption over time when using synthetic consistently. You'd think a smoother flowing oil would flow more smoothly past piston rings. But since synthetic protects better, over time, some have reported less oil consumption with synthetic. I have used a little 5w-40 synthetic. But from here on out will be using the 15w 40 or 20w 50 synthetics.
.

I imagine the turbo are toast in those sludgy engines?

Newsa, what exactly is wrong with synthesized petroleum oils..?
I've never bought into that argument, seeing as petroleum is such a good lubricant, but it seems to be marketable to some people.

isn't that scamsoils claim to fame, that it doesn't start with petroleum?
,
maybe you can add something to my knowledge base.

Being a waste gated Detroit turbo they probably are junk regardless of the oil used......:D

A new turbo is part of the required overhaul so I don't know if anyone has looked at the turbo cores or not.....

That is a good question though, I'll see if I can take a look today. Another engine just arrived yesterday for a complete overhaul.

Nothing wrong with synthesized petroleum oils or even just fractionally distilled (from crude) and treated (with deterents, viscosity modifiers, etc) conventional oils. They just are not designed for extended drain intervals. If the company with the sludgy engines decided to extend drain intervals with an oil that is not designed to be used that way, then that would in my opinion explain the sludge.

whatever you are doing in there, it looks good as new

My exact thoughts. Amazing transformation of a sludgy engine to a perfectly clean engine.

On a different note... It was funny that the smell of sludge came to my nose when I saw the sludgy engine. It (the smell) was all in my head because I was just looking at a picture. But it was funny (to me).

Hear ye hear ye!
I would also like to declare that I will probably be ok with my oil choice.

I will remind you all each time the subject comes up.

You should use Kendall Super D XA. It's your namesake. :D

I don't know, they've been using 10w30 cj4 in the X12 and 15 (former isx) engines for some time and approved the use of FA4 in those engines from day one of (fa4) inception.
