Couple years ago I put in two Westach guages. One is pre-turbo EGT/Boost combo. One is the duel temperature (why not have two where one could be! :) ) of which I have one side hooked up to the trans pan, and the other is empty.

Question is: what is the best use of the other temp sensor? Any opinions? I considered the rear end but I don't tow very often and can't afford the finned cover with sensor fitting :( .

What about intake air? Boosted air temp? Post turbo? What else matters that is not already measured?

Curious about what you guys measure and why.

Thanks,

Sensor hooked up to the trans pan?? Huh?

What temp range is this dual temp gauge?

Coolant temp would be my choice. Another choice could be oil temp. Both easily accessed under the hood.

Oh yeah, thats on a '92 auto - sorry.

The guage goes up to 2500 I think.

If you were to monitor engine oil temp, whats the best/easiest way to tap into the system?

There is an unused 1/8" tapped port on the oil filter mount where you could put a sensor. I think 250* would be enough, not sure where the Cummins runs at. My big Volvo engine in my company tractor runs about 210ish* warm/loaded, iirc. Coolant would be right there at the thermostat housing, a 1/2" plug in the head.

Yes 250 F should do it. When we were testing camshafts in engines we heated the oil to 240 F as that was considered the max.

In regards to trans oil temps..... now keep in mind this isn't 'rumor or legend', the auto trans has an oil temp has a sensor in the case and it is set for 275*F  :--) now why they came up with that threshold is beyond me but it's there and if you reach that temp your transmission will either dump you out of OD or prevent you from upshifting to it until temps come down... . course by that time you've pretty much cooked the oil and damaged other parts like seals and so forth.

pb...

I'll look for that 1/8" port at the oil filter. That sounds like the way to go for now. Will be interesting to watch the oil temps anyway! The guage is actually 300* max, I was guessing from memory earlier and added an extra "0" by accident.

I'll be installing an auto trans cooler soon. When hauling heavy loads up a grade it will spike to 225* for a spell. Thats with synthetic fluid. Was thinking of placing it under the truck somewhere out of the way of mud/debris but still in the flow of air? Seems like too much to add to the radiator/intercooler/AC stuff already up there dissipating heat.
