My wife and I made a big mistake in a mattress purchase recently. Lost cause at this point. Now we are considering either the Tempurpedic or Select Comfort mattresses. We would GREATLY appreciate any and all feedback from those members who own or have owned either of these mattresses, how long they've had it and what their impressions are/were. Considering the vast expense of either of these mattresses, I am hoping my TDR friends can give me with great advice. Thanks in advance!

David, here's what I can tell you:

They are BOTH excellent setups. They are BOTH overpriced! That said, everyone I know who has dropped the $$ for these high-end mattresses has sworn up and down it was the best investment they have ever made! (assuming they were NOT avoiding admitting making a mistake)

My Dad and stepmom have a Select-Comfort. They LOVE it. My stepmom is like the princess and the pea, and has horrible back problems. The SC mattress gave her rest and mobility again. She says that she can actually sleep 2 hours less and feel MORE rested on the SC mattress.

SC will refund your money if you don't like it, but you have to box up and repack this huge setup (good luck) and they won't pay return shipping AFAIK.

The Tempur-pedic mattress is my personal favorite, though. It is unbelievably comfortable. I went to a store once and sprawled on it for a little bit. My wife ended up having to wake me up!! Yes, I fell asleep in like 3 minutes. That's never happened to me before. I have no other experience with a TP mattress, but I have used their pillows for quite some time and I can't sleep without them now!

The drawbacks to the TP mattress are more than just cost. First, it has a lot of give to it, so your bedroom olympics with the wife may be a little more difficult. Second, it will get as hard a concrete if you let it get too cold in the room (50°). I own TP pillows, and you can seriously injure someone with them if they get very cold. So you won't want this kind of setup for camping.

Personally, I think I would try a tempur type of mattress topper before I went hole-hog on the mattress. Truth is, only the top 2 inches or so of memory foam really matters- as long as you have support under that layer, it will be comfortable.

We have the Select and love it. Have had it about 5 years or so. At the time we went with their top of the line and it is pricey but darn comfortable.

Got the 5000 series Calif King Select Comfort. Great quality & fixes sleep/bed related problems. Pricey is an understatement :--)

I have the Select Comfort. My back really likes it. Depending on how my back feels, I can adjust it to what is the most comfortable. Have had it about a year or two. No complaints. Also I rarely ever have an arm fall asleep anymore at night. Less tossing and turning. Don't have to wake up in the middle of the night to put the blankets back on anymore.

Instaed of spending the $400 plus for the foundation that is made to go with it, I have regular box spring under it.

Guys,

I truly do appreciate all of you taking the time to respond. I'm going to wait a few days and see if I receive any additional feedback before I get into a serious  discussion with the wife as to which way "we" are going to go. Thanks!

PS- Another nice feature of the Select Comfort matress is that you can adjust each side seperately. That way one person won't think it's too hard or soft compared to the other persons thoughts.

You know, I wonder what it's like to roll from side to side with drastically different inflation levels? Real firm on my side to really soft on my wifes. I guess something like rolling into a mud hole :)

Thanks,

David
