Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Allison Trans (FYI)

Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Eliminate the LP?

Two things today... .

First, let the truck warm up, then mashed on the go-pedal... . instantly set a code (P1693, which I know isn't anything to worry about). But why would it set this code now? I had the truck all day yesterday, and drove it just the same, and it never set it.

Second, when I accellerate hard, there is a terrible clicking/knocking noise coming from the right side under the engine. If I let off a little, it'll go away. It was present before hooking up the wire on my Comp, but now after, it's worse. I thought it was my turnbuckle, so I tightened it up today, as it was a little loose, but it's still making the noise. Since my turnbuckle is "wired" on, I went and bought a smaller turnbuckle and a spring to put on in place of the larger one and the wire. I'm now seeing 32 lbs of boost where before the pump-wire I would only see 25 here at 5000' elevation. Anybody have any ideas what this noise is? Thought it might be in the transmission, but after having the transmission done, that sure ain't the case.

Thanks for any help. Josh.

Does it sound at all like compressed air? If so could be a broken head bolt, or manifold bolt. Just an idea, I had one break on a NTC 400 one time (I know diff. engine, but same maker) Made a weird "chirp" sound... ... .

With the increase in pressure it may have found a weak spot. . ,

hmmm.....

that's a good idea... . I'll go take a look. I already checked out the exhaust bolts, and they're all fine and tight (already had the straps put on). What other bolts should I look at?

Josh

Something loose/damaged in torque converter - or loose motor mounts/exhaust system that is hitting something under engine torque... Either of these now showing up with greater torque from connecting the pump wire?

not the T/Q

Gary,

I am almost 100% positive that it isn't anything loose in the torque converter... . I just had the DTT transmission put in by Fred at Desert Diesel this last weekend. This is only my second day of driving the truck with the new transmission.

The noise is coming from the right side of the engine compartment, only under hard acceleration, and it gets quieter once speed is built up, but doesn't totally go away. I'll put the spring and turnbuckle on in the morning and report back the results.

Any more ideas? (Haven't had a chance to check for broken engine bolts yet).

Thanks, Josh.

I am watching this thread with interest. I have noticed this same noise, only when the truck is fully warmed up. It sounds like it's coming from the right side of the engine compartment, possibly around the turbo/exhaust system. Doesn't seem to affect power or acceleration, but sounds AWFUL.

Icoblentz,

That's the one! Sounds like my turbo or something around there is going to just rattle itself right off the truck!!! I will find this noise, and when I do, will definetely report back the findings.

Anybody else have some ideas?

Josh.

In my case, it seems to occur after a heavy pull up the mountains, or a run down the highway at 65 mph or more. It seems to happen somewhere just above 2000rpm. Does any of this sound familiar?

well,

that's not quite the sound that I WAS hearing, that's right, WAS hearing. Mine was only under hard acceleration, and high boost numbers. I just went out, and started looking at things, and just happened to run my hand over my rear exhaust manifold bolts... . guess what, all 4 were loose!!! On cylinders 5 and 6, all four top and bottom bolts were loose. I also noticed that the retaining strap that had been installed by the dealer due to the TSB is missing off the last two cylinders. Hmmm..... so I tightened the bolts up by hand. I haven't drove it just yet, but as loose as they were (finger tightened all of them about 2 turns before I needed the ratchet), I'm sure this was my problem. I'm just not sure whether I want to yank my comp off the truck and take it into the dealer to have them put the straps back on.

Anybody got some suggestions for me as what to do about the missing straps? Front one is still there, just not the rear.

Later, Josh.

Snowracer69 The part # is 5072387-AA quantity of 4 . I hope this helps,Thomas

P. S. The part # on the package is CH5072387-AA, don't know if the "CH" will make a difference or not.

Sorry, I guess I didn't make this clear enough. The noise is definately under hard acceleration, but only when the rpms reach about 2200. From that point on, it goes from a rattle to racket in a hurry.

I'm gonna check the bolts. My '02 came with the straps from the factory.

Does that mean that the part# contains 4 of the straps, or do I need to order 4 of that part #?

Thanks!:D

I also had a noice from the turbo area on a 2000. It sounded like a fluttering sound at certain speeds. I was getting prices on new turbo's.

During the eyeball check I do every fill up, I noticed the rear, bottom exhaust manifold bolt missing. Others at the front and rear were loose.

Replaced bolt and tightened others and the noise went away.

well,

I just got back from driving my truck, and it definitely was the bolts that were causing the noise. Also went to the local Dealer, York Dodge in Prescott, AZ, and after explaining the situation, I got my package of retention straps (4 in the bag) for free on warranty. Don't know if you guys read it or not, but my grandfather had already had this TSB done to my truck before I bought it, but he was charged for it!!! Now, it came right up on their computer that it was covered under the warranty. Anyway, it all seems like it worked out ok. Now it's too quiet in the cab, cause I'm expecting it to make that horendous (sp?) noise when I get on it, and its not. Guess that's a good thing though.

BTW, Thomas, thanks for the link to the TSB. I was going to be looking for it to do this job, and you posted it just in time.

Thanks again for all your help. Hope it's the same thing with yours Icoblentz... nothing major.

Later, Josh.

EDIT: Also had a long discussion with the parts guy about "how loud and annoying those diesels are. " He asked me if I've ever stood next to a PowerJoke and told me how loud they are... I laughed and told him mine was louder and more obnoxious, and I love it that way. :) He claimed it wasn't, but wouldn't go for a ride to let me prove it to him. Oh well, to each their own... . he learn the day he lines up next to me in his V-8 and tries to win. Oo.

Are you saying that the original retaining straps fell off?

ummm...

That's a roger DEZLPWR,

he had them put on about 1-1/2 years ago now, when the truck had about 25-30K miles on it. The original ones that were on cylinders number 5 and 6 are gone. The only one left is the one on the top bolts for cylinders 1 and 2. I will probably take it off when I put the other new ones back on.

That sucks! What good are those retention straps if they don't do the job that they were supposed to do? Another brilliant idea from DC... #@$%!

.

that's a roger... . at least they made it right with me... . glad he didn't start snooping around in my truck or under the hood w/ the Comp still on there. Just took my word for the mileage and stuff.
