Today I test drove a Ford Powerstroke 6. 0l King Ranch Crew Cab - and hated it. No diesel should wait until 2500 RPM to begin it's power band.

I then went and test drove a Dodge 2500 Lariat Sport with the 5. 9 HO/48RE and immediately traded my 2003 SLT 5. 9 SO/47RE for it.

I can't understand why anyone would buy the SO after driving the HO. I did move the Edge-EZ to the new truck and am thrilled with the difference in power and the performance of the new 48RE transmission.

I had planned to wait for the early 2004's but this truck had everything I was looking for - including a dealer installed sun roof (that closes when you turn the key off) and a remote start unit - so I took the plunge (and the hit from trading in a 7 month old 2003 with 17000 miles).

The local muffler shop and hitch shop's owner test drove a new Ford and the Dodge.

He has been a loyal Ford customer for many years, but he has choosen to order a Dodge. He liked the power, ride, and styling of the new Dodge CTD. :D

I don't know who your trying to kid, up the new 6. 0L TD from ford has plenty of power, and the 5-speed auto will run circles around any dodge.

please note that the HP ratings for the ford (325) are at a high RPM, and that the cummins ratings for the TQ and HP are quicker to hit peak and hold peak longer

The life expectancy of the new 6. 0 from Drof can be measured in minutes. They ought to get out of the Diesel business.

You've got 1 out of 3 correct: the pferds DO have a larger turning radius than a Dodge!:D

the heading on this thread gave me some serious pause!

1) How come the Dodge CTD makes more power then the Ford on the Dyno?

2) Notice Ford waited LESS THEN A MONTH after Dodge's new truck to announce Ford's output numbers? I guess what the Ford power output really is wasn't "known" until after Dodge announced their numbers. If you believe that... .

But let's get real:

Numbers talk; hype walks.

I'll be at the next KC dyno day; posting better numbers then stock HO Fords with my stock HO CTD. Again. Me and others. Come and watch.

I'm not knocking the Power Stroke, just pointing out that a former Power Stroke owner likes the new CTD better.

The Cummins engine unquestionably pulls better at lower RPM's and does not have to spin as many RPM to comfortably motor down the highway under a load.

My main concern is the new Ford diesel engine. While International is a competant small-mid size diesel engine manufacturer, this is a brand new clean sheet of paper design for them. Even Cummins has had it's share of problems with new engine designs. Expect the same from International.

In my opinion, the best low horsepower diesel engine that IHC ever made was the DT466 series. Over time they took this design and refined it into the fine engine it is today. But guess what? It is an in-line six cylinder engine. In my opinion they have never made a really good V-8 engine. No, they aren't bad engines but certainly not a durable or trouble free as the 5. 9 litre CTD engines.

The torque on the 6. 0L was going to be 550 until Dodge had its #'s for the HO and then they changed it to the current 560.

Run circles around any Dodge? I kinda doubt it. Unless the Dodge was parked and the owner was totally unaware of some lunatic doing circles around his truck.

Outrun my truck? If the PSD is running... and not on the lift for it's weekly repair... Probably without much trouble. My SO/47RE doesn't raise my adrenelin level too much. For some reason, about half the PSD owners I come up next to at a light think I want to race. When the light turns green, all I can hear is that fluttering sound from the exhaust as they flutter away from the light. I wouldn't care if it could outrun a Ninja. I couldn't drive a truck that's less reliable and costs more. Or one that sounds like a flock of pigeons flying the coupe when you step on the loud peddle.

When I'm in my Dodge, I'm not in a big hurry to get there anyhow. I'm already where I want to be. ;)

From the numerous dyno runs that have occured in the NW where stock 6. 0 PSDs and '03 HO Cummins have been pitted against each other, sometimes the PSDs outdo the CTD by about 20hp, but more often the PSD is the loser by 10 or more HP. However in ALL instances, the PSD comes up short on Torque by a large margin compared to the CTD, and way way short of the advertised rating even when 15% or so driveline loss is accounted for.

Last weekend at BD one dyned 265, and that was with a chip. I saw one go 238/380 at Monroe this winter. Cant say I really believe those numbers Ford is claiming. Even if they were true It still wouldnt change in my mind which is the better engine or truck.

Hmmm

Even if the ford has more power,it wouldnt be enough to run circles around the dodge. It would be very close either way. I have been for a ride in the 6. 0 with the torque shift, my dodge has the 6 speed so it was really hard to judge. After 50mph i wouldnt be afraid of the 6. 0 at all. The dodge gets 5 mpg better than the ford. The oil filters for dodge coast 8. 95 fords coast 25. 00 to 35. 00. Air filters dodge 25. 00 Ford 118. 00 . All things considered i think dodge wins hands down. Friday i went to twin falls to buy a used car for my daughter. On the hertz used car lot there were 11 6. 0 psd and only 2 03 ctds. :D

I know a kid who just recently traded his 7. 3 powerstroke for a new 6. 0 powerstroke and he doesen't like it at all for the pulling ability of the truck with heavy loads even compared to his old truck. Especially not compared to a dodge of any sort. He said it was almost like driving a gasser when taking off with heavy loads because according to him (A FORD MAN) the 6. 0 motor has really no bottom end to speak of. I mean sure it revs to something like 4200 stock, but any time you take a diesel motor and lower size of the motor and wrap it up even tighter the longevity of it has to go way down.

There is definitely a reason that ALL the major diesel engine manufacturers always go back to a straight six design. The only "V" type diesel engines in major use today are extremely large-big tractor, biig gen set, ships, trains, etc. I rest my case.

I'm not sure the trade-in value means much since it's an arbitrary figure in the over-all cost of the deal. I can say that with retail to retail pricing they gave me $33k for my old truck. (2003 SLT 4X4 SO/47RE, Cloth, Premium Sound,... with 17,800 miles)

I traded for $11k difference. My old truck had a list price of $41,500. The new truck (with all the aftermarket goodies) had a list price of $46,500. (Without the $2k rebate it would have been $13k difference. )

I know I took a hit, but it was worth it! <Big Grin!!>

I'd slash my wrists if I had to pay $25 to $35 for oil filters and $118 for air filters. Sounds like it would be better to take a beating trading in the Phord on a Dodge JUST from a maintenance standpoint. I wonder if the air filters come with KY Jelly or Vaseline ? ? ?
