I guess I'm missing something here. Here are a couple of scenarios:

1) completely disabling the wastegate and achieving 28-32 pounds maximum boost vs. modifying the wastegate to open at say 35-40 pounds and actually generating enough boost for it to open. Seems that the folks doing the latter are running the greater risk by pushing the turbo to run outside it's designed boost and RPM limits.

2) completely disabling the wastegate and achieving 28-32 pounds maximum boost vs. modifying the wastegate to open at say 35-40 pounds and only running a maximum of 28-32 pounds and never having the wastegate open. Seems like the folks doing the latter are in absolutely no better shape if their wastegate NEVER opens at max boost.

I understand the concept of a wastegate, but if you NEVER reach a boost level that will push the turbo to its designed limits or you purposefully set the wastegate to open at a boost level that you know you will never reach, what's the benefit of a working wastegate? Seems like there are lots of exhaust housings out there that don't have any wastegate at all. My 2 cents...

I remembering reading either on this board or in an email from Mark Chappel that th HY35 turbo becomes inefencent at boost levels of 32 psi or more. So if you try to go beyond that you are gaining nothing. I would say that once you go beyond the turbo's effective range you would begin to build more heat. IMHO... ... ... .....

zman, Good call but the reason for having the wastgate function "slightly higher"than that of which you can produce is So the Extra boost that you produce Can go somewhere when lets say you Yank your foot off the gas quickly when someone in front of you slams on the brakes... . That "overboost" from The exact moment the foot comes up, that pressure doesn't build up with no where to go and spin the impellor backwards. (Dredded Turbo "Bark")

Am I going in the right direction with this?

I've had a lot of people ask for the pictures that used to be linked to this thread, so I added them to my album:

turnbuckle pictures

I think this is still the easiest way to disable the hardlined wastegates found on the HY35 turbos.

Are we "deactivating" the wastegate with the turnbuckle or are we closing it? I recall the wastegate forces exhaust pressure to the turbine to spool up the intake air. At higher exhaust pressure the gate opens more to relieve the exhaust pressure. Correct? By holding the gate closed boost is increased but what about turbo and manifold temperatures? Hmmmmmmm????

I am going to do this fix as soon as I find a cheap boost fooler,so I dont set off any over boost codes. I am trying very hard to hold onto a little thread of warranty.
