Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Thermostate Question

Would a cool running motor (140) stumble when you nailed the throtle. Even when I let the truck idle for 20 minutes it doesn't get much warmer.

I don't know where you live but if your engine is at 140 it shouldn't stumble. Try this, if the temps are above 50 to 55 in the morning, start you engine and get oil pressure, then step on the throttle until it reaches 1500 rpm. If it misses, runs rough and blows white or blue smoke you are most likely out of time. Check the timing. That is if you have checked your fuel lines and make sure that you are not sucking air. I'm sure that there are other things to do but this is easy and quick.

when i first got my truck it had no thermostat and it would run like crap sputtering popping and belching white smoke till it warmed up, sometimes still ran like crap even after the 16 mile interstate run on the way to work when stepped on in under 50* temps, a thermostat helped but the ultimate problem was the timing was way off 11. 5 degrees on my 215 hp truck

If the engine is stock and you stomp on it at idle it WILL "stumble". That's turbo lag. A friend of mine has a '96 that is bad for that.

i had to just about idle though the gears when it was cold out till i got the timing right, now by time i get into 2nd i can stomp at will

still pretty cool in the mornings. Is there any way of checking to see if I'm getting air in the lines? No fuel leaks

any time I stomp on it it stumbles. Seams like it got better when I moved the star wheel forwar. But alot more smoke

Possible you have a weak spring in your overflow valve. If you know where the valve is, you can inspect it for any work done, eg. . broken paint to see if its been changed. You can take it apart and measure the spring, I believe the correct size is right around . 5" If you have around 100k and it hasnt been changed, its time. Worth about 35-40$+ship and about a 10min job.



As for your fuel lines, follow all the hard lines to the flex sections under the drivers feet, then follow them up the bellhousing to the fuel pump. If you have any fuel droplets/etc hanging on the lines, you definetly have a leak. On my 96, the lines, particularlly the return line, was horrible. Changed out the entire soft return section, and she runs great now. I recommend Trident Marine hose #365, from www.tridentmarine.com.
