Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) thermostats

I have noticed you can buy the 180 degree and 190 degree thermostats. but i have also noticed you can get them with and with out the jiggle pins. what are the point of the pins and is it better to have them or not have them...

I think the pin is just for venting, while filling the system.
