Check out this news article. Fuel Use

Scroll down to the table that shows the most fuel-hungry vehicles. The Chevy 1500 is 3rd only to 2 Lamborghinis! 5 of the 12 on the list are from GM.

Yet another great reason to own a diesel. :D

I fugured mine to be about $45 per week x 52 weeks = $2340/year for the truck. Add another $1100 for the car per year. Then thrown in vacation driving.

Now add in the cost of the oil & filters & brakes & tires & shocks & belts & hoses & insurance & & &.

We put 30k miles on the truck and about 20k miles on the car per year.

Using their formula:

In the first 15,000 mile driven this year I have used 956. 874 gallons of fuel.

I WISH I had paid their theoretical $1. 35/gallon (my average for the year is $1. 65).

Anyway, using their methodology and my driving style and a few thousand mile of towing, my cost would have been $1291. 78. Well below the gassers.

My 95 Suburban 4X4 regularly knocked down 17 to 18 mpg on the highway and my Cummins gets 19 to 21. Not a whole lot of difference in mileage but a bunch in towing power. My Dads 2wd Tahoe will knock out close to 22mpg on the interstate. But neither of them will get anywhere close to the Cummins in mileage when you hook a trailer on the back. And neither of the gas burners will still be running at 400,000 miles although both of Dads previous Suburbans had over 230,000 miles when he traded them off.

I don't think they're refering to your neighbor's Silverado that gets filled up at the nearest station with 89 octane. Special fuels are expensive. Biodiesel would knock the VW out of the top fuel squeazers too. The article is pure propaganda. We don't drive our Durango much so it's far more fuel efficient than that Honda hybrid thing. Probably costs less to buy too.
