Expedition help!

That is what happens when a rear wheel person gets into the front drive world, fifty plus years of rear drive embeds itself in your brain. J S Performance in Abbotsford BC did all the work on it. It surprises a lot of people that think that diesels are slow.

My '09 Jetta transmitted quite a bit of road noise on chip seal, rough pavement etc with the stock tires. 205/55R16 Bridgestone Turanza EL400-02.

Switching to a different tire helped out significantly. The rumbling and whirring is reduced greatly. The car is much quieter.

Thanks for your first hand observation report. I'm disappointed but was afraid of that possibility.

What tire brand reduces road noise?

Many positive reviews of the Michelin Primacy MXV4 tires.

I went with Toyo Tourevo LS. Interesting that they don't show up on the Toyo U. S. website but do show up on the Toyo Canada website.

I bought them at Les Schwab--large western U. S. tire store chain. IIRC they have some sort of exclusive agreement with Toyo on some tires but don't really know if that is factual or just a rumor. At any rate, they were ~149. 00 each before mounting, balancing, and the governor's allowance.

How do you like the Michelins? I was going to get those but the price on the Toyos was too good to pass up, and the (local) reviews on the Tourevo have been terrific.

Another tire I've heard good things about is the Nokian EnTyre. Unfortunately only one tire store in my area carries them in stock, and they informed me that after 2012 there won't be a U. S. distributor... ???

The Michelins are a nice riding, quiet tire, with excellent wet and dry traction, though they ARE wearing faster then I am used to with other Michelin tires. With 20k on them, I would say they are roughly 2/3 worn, though I did NOT rotate well for the first 15k miles, so that is my fault. The fronts DEFINITELY wear faster then the rears on the Passat wagon.

Our Pilot came with Bridgestones, which transmitted every section joint on our freeways. They were dead @ 27K. I replaced with Michelin Latitude Tours which are super quiet.

Thanks! I wonder if these cars are inherently hard on tires. Have been hearing many reports of TDIs and tires wearing faster than the manufacturer's treadwear ratings...
