My truck had the upgrade kit put on in 2009. In June of 2010, my left tie rod end broke just as they describe while I was maneuvering to park. Dodge told me to pound sand then. Now, I get this recall letter and send in all of my paperwork again. They now tell me to pound sand again because this stuff happened after 2/13/2008. The tre was obviously defective and I'm sure I'll get another letter 3 years from now recalling this one. This company is a joke, at least their customer service is.

Was it faulty or improperly installed?

I don't think it was anything that logical Bob. The upgade kit had been installed by a Dodge dealer. It's not like anybody from Dodge inspected the broken part.

Brethren-

I just recently went through this... so wanted to share!!! I had my front-end upgraded about 2 years ago to the "latest and greatest". From what I have been told the original Recall was H46. Since I had the upgrade installed I have put around 50k miles on it. So... . just last week my tie-rod broke on the driver side while parking the truck. Best part my truck was full of clients... ..... GOOD TIMES!! Since this was related to the upgraded system I opted not to fix myself and let the dealer handle. Unfortunately I had to take it to a local dealer (closest)... . which is where the fun begain. The dealer tried to tell me that even though I had the upgraded front-end I would have to pay for the repair or at least the labor. Their reasoning was based upon miles since the intial repair and how long ago it was repaired. I argued the fact that this was a recall (Recall L16) which is not subject to miles or time! They disagreed so I called Dodge Corporate and explained my case. After explaining my issues with Dodge they agreed that I was in the right and that they would notify the dealer that all repairs would be covered on them and not me. Dodge Corp. was extremely professional and went out of their way to assisit. Apparently when you call they open a case which is forwarded to the dealership for clarification. NOTE: The mechanic who worked on my truck told me that when the tir-rod knuckle breaks it only happens at extreme angles ... ... . associated to parking or manuevering to park (example: 5 point turn). Apparently there has been any cases where the tir-rod broke in transit. Sorry for the long post... ... ... . I hope it helps.

Big Thumbs Up for Dodge Corp taking care of me!!!

Correction above: The mechanic told me that there HAS NOT been any cases of tie-rod breaks while in transit.

Also Note: Since my repair 2 of my buddies who have 2010 trucks have had the same break however when it occured the tie-rod damaged the rotor. Not good!! Take the time to get this repair done... ... when it happens there is absolutely nothing you can do! Unfortunately I was stuck in the middle of a parking lot blocking the lunch crowd!! Again good times!!! ;-(

Southbound, Good to hear they took care of you. Very similar to my case, I called too, opened a case too, and was subsequently told to pound sand. At least one of us got some help.

OK, so I've been reading on and on and as yet not installed my upgrade bought last month from OEM parts. Was I suppose to even by these parts being that there is a recall ?

Should I take it somewhere to have the kit installed or, do it myself and schedule the alignment same or next day with the shop checking the 5 degrees of concern ? The thought of taking to a stealership for ANY work sends chills up my spine...

Obviously, my truck is beyond warranty, but the recall is old going back to when my truck was under warranty. Was I a fool for not paying close attention to recalls never known by never dealing with dealerships ?

Shouldn't Dave Smith Motors of Kellog, ID kept me informed of recalls ?

I remember getting notices in the mail from GM every now and then for things dealing with my 95 Suburban, why not from Chrysler ?

On a side note, I'm having DTT in Abbotsford, BC rebuild my transmission this month, rear main seal too, they are ASE certified shop for all repairs. Might I consider having them do the install ? I can't stand paying for something when I'm capable of doing it as long as I have all the information and tools required to take on the task.

BTW, regarding the pitman arm pulling issue many have mentioned in previous threads, my PA has 1/4" of gap which seems like plenty to get a puller on whereas, many others here have had it jammed on tight to the box.

TGVET, As far as I know the parts you purchased (52122362AF) are not recall parts, they are TSB parts. You have to buy TSB listed parts if your out of warranty but recall parts are free of charge.

The parts kit you got online was a Mopar kit right?

Yes, except for the Billstien dampener, front shocks I ordered separate from Shockwarehouse.com

moparsupercenter.com
