So, getting ready to do my timing this weekend, looked at ordering the timing tool set and was given a price of $300!

Spoke with Piers, and they said to do it the Static method as opposed to the directions the TSB's give (1st plunger method). Basically pin the gear and pump, then mark damper 1/8" and rotate.

So, anyone ever done this way? Any step by step instructions just so I do not screw anything up?:-laf

Looking for 16 deg.

Thanks!

Robert

If its on a p-pumped engine depends on if its a 180 or 215 HP 180 pump was set stock at 14 deg 215 was set at 13. 5 deg 1/8th in will give you about 1 deg I would set about 1/4 in for a 215 and about 3/16th for a 180 that is counter clockwise on the damper.

Yes, mine is a 180.

Would the timing have slipped at all over the course of time making me need to advance more??

Thanks!

Robert

If you use the timing pin on the gear to set TDC and find the pump can be pinned at stock timing through the timing hole on the side, then the pump timing has not slipped. If the timing has never been fooled with, chances are very good that it has not slipped. Slippage is very rare.

If it has slipped, you'll have to mark the damper then rotate the engine until you can pin the pump (find the tab through the hole). Once you do that, a measurement on the distance the damper moved from its TDC mark will indicate any amount of slippage from stock. Compensate accordingly for your new mark for your desired higher timing.

Started my timing adjustment tonight (read got the tools in the end;)) so I am doing it the "correct way" if you can say there is a right and a wrong way. !;)

Anywho, three questions.

My dial indicator is showing 4. 175 mm and that I calculated to just under 15 deg. My engine data plate says should be 14 deg. Does that make sense? Has that slipped? I would say I did something wrong, but I did check it a second time.

Second, for PDR towing twins, DDP stage 2, Taper cut DV's and #10 cam plate, I assume 16 deg or 16. 5 would be a good number?

Three - Do the delivery valves ALWAYS have a copper washer in there? In the TSB directions (click here: http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1994/18-10-94a.htm) it says to remove the copper washer with a pick and says to replace it with a new one when finished. I did not find a copper washer in there. Did I miss something??

Thanks so much for your time!

the newer pumps don't have washers under the delivery valves and you aren't supposed to use washers with most aftermarket dv's to my understanding
