I would like to time my 96 dodge diesel P-pump. I have never done it before. There is no one in this area that will set it other than stock setting. I have read thread after thread about it until my head hurts and my eyes glaze over. I do not do well learning from reading but can learn from seeing. Does anyone know of a video of someone advancing the timing of this pump? I have looked through youtube but couldn’t find what I needed, maybe I missed it. There is a good one about timing the 1st Gen truck. So please, if you know of one let me know.

Where do you live? I just did mine for the first time, (including replacing the p-pump) using printed instructions. It took awhile, but is doable.

Using some cut and paste from other members, this is what you need to know.

How to find true TDC, rather than the inaccurate cam timing pin method;

Find TDC using the drop valve method. Pull #1 valve cover and turn the motor over backwards till you see #1 intake valve opening, then loosen the exhaust valve adjuster and tighten it down to zero lash and give it 2 ½ turns or rounds. Then turn the motor over in the normal rotation till the piston tags the valve, with a TDC pointer in place and pointing to the balancer make a mark on it. Then loosen the exhaust valve and turn the motor say ¼ turn past the first mark going in the normal rotation. Then tighten the exhaust valve adjuster the same amount as you did the first time so the relation is the same, once this is done turn the motor over backwards via the alternator till the piston hits the valve once again. Now make another mark as you did the first time. What you did was find a relationship between either sides of the upstroke, now with the two marks made measure the distance and divide it. That is your TDC of the motor and gives you something to go by.

I am not sure you can measure more accurate than the pin????

If you fully trust the install of the gear to the cam is EXACTLY perfect and the timing pin holder was EXACTLY installed in the gear case (it is adjustable you know), and your gear lash is zero, then the drop valve method is not needed.

I may start donig this procedure again. Have been approached a couple of times. Just getting a bit lazy in my older age. Course, you would have to be able to come to Central Texas for me to do it.

My timing pin was off from TDC by 5/16", measured on the crank damper.

I used the drop valve method GAmes mentioned but installed a dial indicator on the top of the valve stem to track piston travel.

Any time the tools to do a job cost less (or close) to what a shop would charge to do the job, I buy the tools!
