We will be traveling I-40 from Los Angeles to Memphis this summer.

I know Murphy's law will appear.

I am putting new tires on the sport ute for the trip and I know we will have tire trouble.

So I'm wondering what the most prevalent tire shop/chain is along I-40.

which shops have the best/easiest tire warranty?

Thanks

How do you know you will have tire trouble?

I've driven I-40 from L. A. to O. K. City & back for many, many years, sometimes 3 or more times a year, and I have never had tire trouble on that trip.

I've driven it in a variety of vehicles, from my old '54 Chvey 3/4 ton, to a Ford 1-Ton dually, but mostly I've driven my '95 Dodge/Cummins. I've yet to have a tire problem on this trip.

Oh I know I will have tire trouble.

Brand new tires right before a trip spells disaster for my luck factor.

I don't care what brand I buy I will have bad luck with tires

It's just the way my luck goes.

Since you travel the I 40 alot , what 's the most prevalant shop?

I dont know what kind of tire shops are on your route but if you have trouble get a phone book and find a DISCOUNT TIRE shop, also known as AMERICAN TIRE in some areas. These shop have the best customer service of anybody except Southbend Clutch. I took a tire in to be mounted and after it was installed found it had a hole too bad to be patched and they remounted my old tire and wouldnt take any money for it. I found this to be the type of service to be found at every one of their shops I have been to.

Well, if you KNOW it is going to happen I guess it is best to prepare yourself.

I use Michelins on my Dodge--got them from Costco, but have used Discount tire before also, and found them good.

Do you carry extra spares? If you know you are going to have a problem an extra spare or two might come in handy!

I drive I40 from So Cal to Arizona all the time, we have property there. As far as tire shops, not that many, major cities along the way would be Flagstaff, Kingman, Barstow and then you get to LA metro. Best advice is not to sweat it, have good rubber, check your air pressure, have a good spare and of course it doesn't hurt to have the old AAA card, you will be fine.

I don't worry about it when I make my trips, I even get 10 miles off of I40 to get to the property on dirt and gravel roads.

Have fun and make sure the AC is working you will need it.

I use Discount tire. When I get a new truck, go and buy 4 tire cerificates for warranty. This gives me free rotation, flats fixed and IF a tire goes south, a decent replacement price. I figure its cheap as 2xs the Mich's have blown and the first time it cost 195-200 to get the repairs/no replacement from Mich on the tire. If you just figure the cost of rotation for the tire, the certificates should pay for themselves. AND they do toque the lug nuts by hand to your spec's (I usually use 135'# and have the DC purchased locks set to this torque - you'll need to tell them to torque the locks as their practice is not to). So for the little cost, I feel it is worth the rotation, flats fix, valve stem replacement, and almost forgots the balancing.

I guess I should add a PS: once your in the computer, they can track you w/o paperwork and it MIGHT help getting a beter price (at times) for various reasons (had to get 2 trailer tires in Tucson and they gave me the wallyworld pice w/o me going around to ck :D )
