When I got my Tires a few years ago it was get the Hummer wheels and BF Goodrich 315/70r17 well its time for new tires and the chrome since has pealed off the Hummer rims. . Is this size still the preferred tires size for a lvl'd truck??

I just cant decide went to belle tire they quoted 1240. 00 for Cooper Discovery 315/70r15 do I want to stay with that size and risk a 4th change on ball joints or drop to a smaller size??

You just brought up the significance to both size and wheel offset. Often aftermarket wheels are offset more to the outside, putting a huge strain on the suspension components. Monster tires have a lot more inertia, both harder to get spinning, and harder to stop. I have the KORE Chase suspension which doesn't do much lifting, with stock forged aluminum wheels from a 2005. I admit the stock size tires look kind of small in the wheel wells, but if I decided to go taller, I wouldn't get wider as well. The new 3500 single wheel Rams use 275-70R18 which are taller and rated (in E form) for 3670 lb. The weight rating is the main reason Ram is using them, since the SRW 3500s have a 7000 lb. rear axle rating. However, a taller tire also affects the effective differential ratio so would be better if you have 4. 10 than if you have 3. 73.

I do have a 4:10 I just have to determine
if I want lasting steering parts with a 285/70 or chance it with good looks with the 315;s :{

As long as you're running stock ball joints, you're going to have to replace them repetitively. That is a weak link on the Dodge, just as the unitized wheel bearings. I picked up a set of the Carli ball joints for mine, after researching what else was available on the market. At the time, they were the best I could find. Expensive? Yes. Very well engineered? Yes. Will it fix it permanently? We'll see.....

Durned if you, durned if you don't... . It all depends on what you can live with. If you go with the larger tires, the wear will be premature on the ball joints, as suggested above. Stock tire sizes will extend that ball joint life, but not fix them. It's a world of give and take... ... :cool:

well im pushing for the Nitto Terra 295/70r17 i can get threw work ill split the difference... ...

The Dynatrac Balls of Steel don't last long. I got 4 years out of them and one side needs to be rebuilt. And my truck never leaves the road. so I'm not hard on them at all. I do run the 315-70-17.
