Just recently on a short trip with the RV I had a tire that lost of its tread, not by simply flying off but wearing off. The real baffling part of this is that it was one of the duals, the inside on. The outside tire appears OK except it is showing more wear than the tires on the other side. One possibility is that I lost about a foot of my tail pipe but the remainder is not blowing directly on the tires. Any experience hear. I think tire was just defective. Dieslman

Not all tires are the same exact size. Any chance the worn out tire was slightly bigger?

Last year I replaced my rear tires (I do not rotate). A few thousand miles later I managed to wedge a rock between the tires on the right side, flattening one and ruining the other. I limped home on the spare and a friend of mine who owns a tire store adjusted them with a road hazard warranty. I was faced with a problem. 3 pairs of tires, all with different tread depth. I opted to pair each side with a new tire and one of the better tires, leaving the front, least tread depth tires on the front. My friend told me it would be better to put the two new ones on one side. I didn't want to because I thought (and still think) that the difference in tire heights would hurt the limited slip. He warned me that the smaller tires would wear out at a faster rate than the new tires and he was right. I ended up having to buy two more tires. The two that I replaced had less than 50k miles on them, normally I get 80 to 90k. Sorry for the long winded reply. The tire that wore out was slightly smaller, not bigger.

Just think about it, most of the load is on the larger one so the small one is the one that will slip to make up the difference. Miss-match in size and you have a battle going on between the two.

It's called roll-out... . the shorter tires is actually sliding slightly to keep up with the taller one, which has more tread and more downforce, so it grips tighter, essentially smearing the shorter one's tread on the pavement..... Radial sidewall. Bias-ply won't do it as bad... . both wear prematurely.

Its unlikely that the tire failure resulted from a tire defect. It almost certainly occurred due to underinflation, undetected flat, or mismatched tires side by side in a dually application.

A suggestion for all you dually owners. I am a Matco Tools dealer and run a 06 Freightliner M2. I found a product called Crossfire. It is a pressure equalizing and monitoring valve that is mounted between dual tires. Here is a link to their site. I bought them on Amazon.

Dual Dynamics

I bought my truck in Oregon and on the drive back I saw these big rigs every time I stopped. Not all that expensive but considering the cost of tires, well worth it.

We really don't have enough info. How old are they, how many miles on them and how often do you drive the rig? Was it flat or just tread bare? Were they a matched set prior to the problem? What was the condition of the tires prior to the trip?

The short RV trip should not have wasted the tire/tires. Unless, the rear axle has shifted (as in broken center bolt or something) and the extra weight and mis-alignment scrubbed the tread off.

It was a Commercial Tire and I think the warranty was 70,000. It only had just over 9,000 on it. Air pressure should have been good since I always check that before loading the RV for the first trip and this was my second trip this summer. Now I don't recall looking closely at the tires after the first trip so the wear may have started then. Just don't know. All the tread was off and in a couple of places you could see steel of the belts. Anyway I put two new tires on, Michelins. I like Michelins and put the two new ones on the front and put the two tires removed from the front on the right dual so all tires on the back are well matched in size and of course on the front too. The outside tire from the right dual is now the spare since it saw more wear due to increased load due to the bald tire. (I think) I will be watching the tire more closely now. Another trip this coming Tuesday. Thanks everyone.
