Okay, folks... Here's the question: Given your choice of brand and "model" of tire, based upon your experience with a CTD, what would you choose??? BFG, Nitto, GoodYear, Michelin, Firestone, etc. What kinda mileage have you got on them, what pressure do you run, would you buy them again, how much did you pay for them (about)???

That being said, when I had my `01, I went through the OEM BFGs (265X70RX17s) in 25k. Then I upgraded to Big O A/Ts (285X70RX17s) which lasted the 35k-plus until I lost my mind and traded it in... I did enjoy the extra rubber between the wheel & the road, it improved the ride quite a bit by making it softer. I might consider this "upgrade" again when I replace the current ones.

I'm asking now, so as to make an informed decision when these wear out... Thanks, I appreciate your time!!!

IMHO, the BFG AT KOs (315s, my first two sets) retain and subsequently throw too many rocks at the underside of the truck. At 91K, I put Nitto TGs 285/75/17E and have been extremely happy with the weight capacity and wear. At almost 120K and with some heavy towing, I'll probably get another 15-20K out of them, but I also do a five tire rotation. IMO, these are the perfect sized tires for these trucks.

P. S. Don't listen to anyone about tire wear on a forum. It's too subjective and dependent on a person's driving style. Some guys have unrealistic expectations of their tires.

Hey Mark,

Did you put aftermarket wheels and tires on your 01? I don't believe they went to 17" wheels and tires until 03. My 02 came with LT265/75/16E. I had the stock Michelins go 53k. Then I went with Bridgestone Revo's in stock size and they went 50k. I now have BFG A/T's in LT285/75/16E. The truck has 135k on it and the BFG's are shot. I won't buy them again. I just ordered Cooper AT3 in LT285/75/16E.

When my OEM Goodyears had to be replaced at 30K miles, I went with Michelins. Got 45K out of the first set and the second set were wtill good when I traded the '04. 5 in at 118K miles. The Michelins were road tires because I did no offroad driving.

I always ran the fronts at 70 psi and the rears at 70 psi bobtail and 80 psi towing.

I replaced my B F Goodrich with Michelin's tires. I replaced them with M/S2 Michelin, LT265/70R17/E. I run the front at 60 psi and the rears when loaded at 70 PSI otherwise they are at 45 PSI. These are rated for 70,000 miles by Michelin, I rotate them every 5K. Yes, I would buy them again. All of my replacement tires for all my vehicles have been Michlens, can not complain about the life of their tires.

You have to consider what you want, tire life or winter traction. . On these trucks with absurd amounts of torque you are hard on tires. Towing is hard on tires, and towing on dirt roads is worse.

The Michelin are great for summer use but are scary winter tires. I ran Toyo AT's and they were great in the winter but wore out too fast for their cost.

I now run OEM take-offs in the summer and switch to 255/85/17 BFG KM2's in the winter. I get the performance I need in the season I need it and for the cost I can't beat the miles I will get out of both sets.

Like it has been said tire wear is subjective but torque is there on all the rigs. . If you do a lot of highway miles you will do decent on tires, but any city/towing miles and tires wear out quick. I wore my OEM take offs down 4/32 in the rear and 2/32 in the front in 6600 miles this summer, 58% of those were towing. I didn't rotate them, but next summer I will swap them and put about the same miles on them and the wear will even out. Still about 30% of my tread is gone in under 10K miles!

Well...

Thanks for all your replies thus far, guys! And yes, Jeff, you indeed are correct. My bad. Must have brain-farted that part... CRS must be settling in... (Can't Remember I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER)...

I would never reccomend BFG's on our trucks, very likely to have DW with them, some poeple like them , most dont.

I agree with Kry226 on the Nitto TGs. I have 21,xxx miles on my current set. Not too aggressive for the highway and pretty good traction for winter. I agree tire wear is subjective to some degree, but I will make a brief comment anyway. My first set were Pro Comp ATs. They wore terribly uneven. My current Nitto TGs (with the same driving style/conditions, rotation, etc. ), are wearing very evenly. I am pleased and would recommend them. Happy tire shopping!

Thanks, everyone, for your input. I appreciate all of your sharing with me. If anyone else has anything to add, please feel free...

I had just over 64K on my OEM Michelins, 4 tires not the spare which never hit the road until 2 days before I bought the new tires. They still had a few K miles on them but I wanted new tread before towing the RV to Ark. next month. Of the 64K, over 48K was towing my 11K fiver. I bought new tires just like the OEMs since they served so well.

I run 285/70/17 Nitto Dura Grapplers and am very pleased with them. I keep them at 58 front, 52 rear, unless towing. Then 60 front and rear, since my camper is only around 8,000 lbs. 40,000 miles so far, with well over 10,000 miles towing. 99% of my miles are stop and go urban driving, rarely getting up to 60 mph, or getting into OD. That's hard on tires. Oh... and there may be about a mile of spinning tires in there, too.
I carry a tire depth gauge with me, but those tires are in storage for the winter, so I can't measure them right now, but would call it 6-8/32" left, which should be another 5-10,000 miles. Tread wear is straight across, nothing weird.
Nitto also makes a new tire called Crossteks HD, which seems even more highway oriented, which for me is fine since I have 4WD. They are supposed to last even longer. .

Michelin LTX M&S over 75,000 miles per set twice. Not a single flat with Wyo, Montana Canada and Alaska trips plus a lot of farm driving off road in Missouri
