Just noticed my stock airbox doesn't seal worth a crap, it's warped and doesn't close on the forward side at all.
I could get some "fasteners" of some type I guess, to pull it together or replace it with ?
I like the looks and specs of the S & B but have read a few posts of some guys going back to stock.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Long ago some TDR members found that a big air filter from a semi would fit under the hood and connect to the air inlet hose. It was dubbed the Big Honkin' Air Filter (BHAF). If you look at some signatures you will still see BHAF as one of the mods done to different trucks. I found that it seemed like every time someone complained about high blowby that a BHAF was in the signature. I came to the conclusion that there were three possible reasons why the engines were worn so badly. First is that since BHAF is a generic term, it covers all big, round, paper air filters and the filtration efficiency of some is lacking. Second is the manner of installation that permitted dirty air to bypass the filter. Third is that none of them are very efficient, but they look cool. My choice about a million miles ago was a AFE Proguard 7 with a simple heat shield. Nobody so far that is running a BHAF has matched the low silicon readings of my oil samples. My last sample was with 24,243 miles on the oil. Silicon was 6ppm.

Interested in the AFE Pro Guard 7 myslef and was looking into trying one in a stock air box, but it might be worth trying a larger round filter with a simple heat shield? Been using an Amsoil Eaa106. Which AFE filter are you using? And is it with the stock tube from the OEM air box? 4" inlet AFE? If you have any pics would be great! Thanks

Hello, check out https://www.turbodieselregister.com/threads/21116-Big-Honking-Air-Filter-Installed-%28long%29?highlight=oil+sample. It's the introductory thread on the BHAF. The last post on the last page (15) is where I posted results on a Fleetguard oil analysis with the BHAF. Later as a test on extended oil changes with a Frantz by-pass filter I ran to 23,000 miles on one test, but alas I didn't find it just now. I'll post it up when/if I do. It did come back good to continue running that oil.

The biggest issue I've seen with folks running a BHAF is not installing a insert into the neck of the filter so it does not distort when the filter to turbo hose clamp is tightened. I use a 1"long piece of 4" exhaust pipe, some use black abs plastic pipe. Also you need to remove or pad the original housing studs so they don't damage the filter and the ac lines need to be protected from damage. Back in 2001 I split some old garden hose and slipped it over the ac lines, has worked fine for about 17 years.

In the final analysis, it's your truck, do what works for you.

Apparently AFE no longer offers the shield I use. In the left picture is a shaded depiction of what mine is but I use the stock intake tube.

I do also have a pre-filter sock over it that catches the larger dust particles and allows longer periods between cleaning and oiling. Since the filter by itself is considerably less money than a AFE cold filter box https://www.amazon.com/aFe-72-90021-Pro-Guard-Filter/dp/B001ABJU9Ua friend of mine is working on a homemade device to mount it on the inner fender. The inlet of the filter is way larger than the stock inlet tube so he started with a PVC adapter. I don't think he's had time to go any farther.

Any opinions on the S & B ?

Thank you for sending the information my way. I see simple heat shields around from time to time and have been considering something like what you have here. Real world experience over a lot of miles is always very useful. Thank you for the useful ideas and information.

I put an S&B on my '00. I liked it.

If you go with something like this, get 2 air filters - so when you pull it off to clean and oil it, you can stick the other one on the truck and you're not down while waiting for it to dry. Then when it's clean, dry, and oiled, stick it in a plastic bag and put it on a shelf - ready to go next time you want to clean your air filter.

I'm not up on oil sample #'s but it would be nice to know the quality of filtration on top of the quantity, if you know what I mean.
Agreed, not a huge fan of K&N, they were pretty much 1st on the market with "performance" filtration, but have seen a few "studies" where they weren't the best.
