Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) To remove cam plate or not???

I need a little more power. I have slid cam plate and houseing farward and still need a little more. If I remove my cam plate how much gain would I get? And how would my smoke control and driveablity be?

This issue has been brought up a # of times, but the general idea is that removing the camplate *MIGHT* cause damage by allowing the rack inside the pump to travel too far and take out $1000 worth of governor parts below it.



Properly adjusted injection pumps actually make more power with less rack travel than removing the plate allows... .



I can tell you this... . you will see an improvement in horsepower by taking the plate out VS. leaving the stock plate in the stock position... . but you do this at your own risk.



Drivability and economy were unchanged when I ran without a plate... I did this for about 15k miles.



Smoke and EGT control is achieved with your right foot.....

If 'no plate' is a concern, then just put in the 0 plate.

Where can you get a # 0 plate?? Anyone wanna trade a #5 for a #0??

I have been running without a cam plate for about 4K miles. I have my AFC set about half way and it seems to control max rack travel. The govenor lever will rest on the AFC when you have your foot in it. You can just adjust your AFC forward or back to control max fuel.

How much power should I gain removing my plate over a stock plate full forward?

Bone stock... . my truck did 139. 9hp at the rear wheels... (no torque #'s... )



By just removing the cam plate and adjusting the AFC... I made 258. 6hp (no torque #'s) at the rear wheels.



I then went to 271hp/671ft-lbs. after bumping the timing to 16. 5°, installing Piers' 3K governor spring kit, and putting on a BHAF.



I won't even talk EGT's, since you should be monitoring those all the time anyhow... .
