Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) To tap or not to tap

I just had a rm injection pump from midwest inj. installed and am curious to know if other CTD owners w/ vp44 are tapping in. I sure will miss the power. I like the idea of a warranty , but... .

I made it about 3 months before I tapped the wire again after my VP change. It's been 16 months since the change now so I'm out of warrenty now.

They only smoke if I don't have any boost, once cruising with 4-5lbs of boost I get a small puff and it cleans up nicely. At WOT I get a dark greyish haze.



If I don't use the smarty smoke is minimal to none.

An Edge box without the wire tapped is just an EZ with lights that you paid too much for. Why not just buy the "Stealth" cover and have the best of both?

ASharp- If I'm correct, the Stealth cover replaces the cover on the IP that doesn't require you to tap the wire, they say you can remove it if you have problems and no one can tell the IP was tapped, saving your warranty. The wire connects to the cover so you don't have to pierce the insulation on the IP wire.



grimesja- Tapping is when you splice into one of the wires on the IP for your chip. Most commonly on Edge Comps, but my TST PM3 does it also. There is an ongoing debate if this significantly reduces pump life or not also.

The so-called stealth covers still tap the wire, they just do it in a different spot. I don't get the "best of both worlds" comment. Tapped is tapped regardless of where on the wire. The benefits and risks are the same. I'd recommend a Posi-Tap connector over the cover. I've heard of some problems with the covers. Or you could go for the gusto and solder. I tapped my first injection pump. This one's remaining a virgin for a while.

Just tap it! If you don't, in 6 months from now, when you finally do tap it, you won't have to post and say; "I should have tapped it months ago!".

ON the other hand, guys installing the Comp - and using it initially in EZ mode have only to tap the wire for added power - PLUS the ability to make setting changes on the fly from the driver's seat - THEN, when they feel comfortable with more power, just tap the wire and GOOoooo - with no hand-wringing about "WHY did I buy an EZ, when for only a few dollars MORE, I coulda got the Comp"...

The cover that came on a friends '02 didn't "tap" the wire. It just makes a connection to the board. To me "tapped" is using either a "T" tap or a Scotch-Loc which actually breaks the insulation on the wire and can (and will) lead to corrosion issues. So your a bit off on your "benefits and risks are the same" comment.

This subject is kind of funny to me... . what is the point of having a comp if your not going to use the extra power?? My only question is why did you not get a Hot Rod VP44 and tap that?



As far as taping the wire vs using the cover... its all the same and if you think the guys at DC are not smart enough to look at the spot where the screw dents the solder you are kidding yourself. They even have a TSB about where to look. Besides the guys I know with the cover always had issues with getting a good connection all the time.
