Getting pizzed off does not give you any more rights than the calm person has. Yes, cops serve the public, by enforcing the laws. Who needs the most protection? The cyclist or the big ole' trucker.

all the people, i am not bashing cops at all, i have one very close in my family and i have the outmost respect for them, bc i almost became one. "Nick" i agree with you about getting pizzed off, but human nature doesnt follow what you just said, i wish it did bc the world would be a better place for all to live. there are a-holes all over, some think they are big ole' truckers, others think they are cyclists, i am kind of in favor of just plain ol general idiot inconsiderate motorist (whatever they drive). just one should not be targeted over another, in todays day and age people want to be treated egual and i am all for it.

Amen! on the human nature thing, I reckon we are all guilty at times, me included as I have my moments too :) Maybe we can blame it on "Eve" ?? ;)

Those who use the roads

There is a few woman pushing prams who use a truck by-pass road around here that has alot of heavy truck traffic. I wait for the day that she or one of them that get smoked and it will be the drivers fault. Rather then picking a road that isn't so busy. Oo. :D

Now that I have had a few more synapses firing, I do recall being smoked. 7 or so years ago?? I was cycling, hwy 89, climbing the east side of Monitor Pass. Past the switchback at around 7000'. I remember sound coming, as it went by. He was pulling a 5W, giving it all it had. I had to suck some soot, he wasn't about to lose his momentum on my account. No harm, no foul. Intent is the key element here.

I held my line, about two inches left of the fog line, I wasn't about to lose my momentum either, as I mumbled "I gotta get one of those".

I wonder how many that complain about cyclists have held up traffic pulling a 5W or horse trailer? But thats okay because "we have horses".

In the city, every cyclist you see riding to work is one less car contributing to the cogestion. It would be nice (utopian?) to have a bicycle path parallel all roads and highways. A small tax of say $1 per gallon ought to do it. Forget that!! Let's give them a little courtesy instead.

Have you ever had a warning for spinning your tires or exhibition of speed? Do that in a school or construction zone and Officer Friendly might not be so accommidating and remind you of a jack-booted thug. Its the situation. If a cop thinks you smoked someone on purpose, you WILL get stopped. Your saved by the fact people think the smoke is just an inherent trait of diesels. Let them find out you can control it, and the attitude will change.

Yes I ride... ... I am a hardcore cyclist... ... . And I feel your pain... ... I actually fear for my life on most of my rides these days unless it is a group ride with one of the local clubs (1,000s of miles per year on local roads). And people still get run over (even on group rides). Cell Phone talkers, Drunks, Hate Crime Morons, etc..... :-{}

People just dont give a crap or are too self centerted to think about anything else but themselves. Most of these cowards would not have the sand to even try to confront you out of their vehicle. But put them in a truck or SUV and they get some sort of bizzare "God" complex? I have yet to figure it out...

It's the same folks as the ones who don't give a couple of feet to disabled motorists on the side of the road. They whizz by a bike at 18 inches--and miss most of the time. But plenty of cyclists get hurt and killed by careless motorists.

So I'm pumped up on endorphins and adrenaline just from riding--then I get the double dose of adrenaline from an idiot driver. And I may be armed.

Be careful out there.

Some folks will never get it, but we cyclist must fear for our lives every time we go out on the road. Most folks recover from being hit by a car. Lance has been hit many times. Other folks die or are crippled by careless motorist.

It's a damn sore subject around cyclists.

And where the hell is the taxpaying exemption for cyclist?! Every cyclist I know owns a car and pays for the fuel same as anyone else. Bogus argument, and the LAWS of this state require us to ride ON the road and follow the same rules as CARS. The area right of the white line is littered with glass and metal from---guess who?

Share the Road!

Share the Road!

And it also says STOP at stop signs and red lights... Slow traffic keep right...

YES, bicyclists are legally permitted to use public roadways other than freeways - but they are ALSO legally required to observe ALL the same traffic laws as motorists!

Where we formerly lived, there were steep grade double yellow-lined and narrow 2-lane roads bicyclists LOVED to use for their rides, and once started up those long grades, there was NO WAY to legally or safely pass the slower moving bikers due to the winding nature of the roads and reduced visibility.

It was not uncommon to see 6-8 cars lined up behind a bike rider traveling at little more than walking speed due to the grade, as they waited for the top of the hill, or for the biker to display the courtesy or common sense to let them by.

Even though there WERE frequent driveways and similar spots where the bikers COULD pull over and let vehicle traffic safely pass, I *never once* saw any of them display the courtesy and consideration to do so!

Courtesy, consideration and respect are just as reasonable attributes for the BICYCLISTS to exhibit as it is for motorists - indeed, MORESO, since the bikers are more vulnerable!

I commonly see bikers fail to stop at stopsigns, or make signals when turning - and following the legal requirement for pulling off the roadway to allow faster moving traffic to pass safely often isn't even in their comprehension!

Some of you ranting at being exposed to danger by vehicles trying to pass you because YOU refuse to pull over and let them do so safely are obviously indifferent to the danger you put THEM to as they often must cross over a lane divider into the potential path of oncoming traffic - danger and injury is JUST as likely to be caused by an inconsiderate BIKER, as it is a careless motorist.

Some bikers seemingly feel THEY are being thoughtlessly singled out for abuse by motorists, and are unwilling to realize or consider it is THEIR OWN lack of consideration and observance of traffic laws and common sense that create issues! You aren't discriminated against *because* you ride bicycles - it's because of HOW you do so!

You want respect and consideration?

Why not show some of your OWN? :(

Excellent points, Gary.

Your examples are what I personally witness more often than not.

Where the hell are you considerate and respectful riders?

Ten mile multi-million dollar bike path off of Hwy 99W near where I live. Some idiot was riding on the fog line of the hwy. No bike path for this guy... no sir.

BTW, I've NEVER smoked or Grover air-horned any bicycle, but my patience is running thin.....

well heres how i see it im a biker i prefer the mtn trails over the street but i have been seen tooling around modesto and surounding areas on my mtn bike and when im on the road i go by size that car weighs 2000lbs i weigh 200 w/ bike that means if he wants to push me around he can so i stay on the side and as far off as possible i make sure my intentions are clear and i wait for gaps to cross pretty much i do everything in my power to not get in the way and i hate it when i see other bikers doing it and since i got my truck turned up i now can smoke them when they are being pricks and feel justified one they are being stupid two i am often riding as they are and know to stay the hell out of the way

Smoking is bad for you...

Reasons not to smoke people.

1. Not good for engine, lugging, sooting up, fuel use, and lower end stress.

2. Not good for health, and breathing problems.

3. Not good for image, smoking one person has just turned him against

ALL

diesels. He will be the one that gets us banned, or makes us have more

EPA crap in the future.

Want to smoke? Take it to a tractor pull, open highway, somewhere it can be appreciated... . :D

The problem I have with cyclists is that they assume when they're exercising in the middle of the road, they somehow have the right-of-way. It's one thing if you're using a bike as transportation but the yahoos that ride my road are a bunch of Lance Armstrong wannabees in their spandex suits out for their Saturday morning circle jerk. One day I'll find out where one of them lives and park my home gym in front of their driveway and refuse to move till my workout is done.

Well, I need to chime in too since I am a cyclist. I would love to have my own lane to ride in on every street. But, that is not a reality, yet. But in the mean time we have to share the road. Just so you non-cyclists know, the reason we (cyclists) do not ride on the white line is to make sure that the vehicles coming will see us better. Aslo the white line is slick and usually has very rough edges. I agree that if cyclists want to be treated fairly that they too should abide by all laws and signs. But, not all drivers abide by all laws and signs, so it makes us equal there too.

Anyway, I always look at every cars license plate as it passes just in case they try to pull something, I will track them down.

For sure, there are abusers on both sides of the issue. My wife and I both have mountain bikes too - But I'd hafta have a death wish to consider running mine in the streets...

Maybe someone should track you (cyclists) down and impede your ability to get to work on Monday morning. How would that make ya feel? pause for 5 seconds before leaving stop signs, drive under the speed limit that sort of thing. I bet it wouldnt take but a few miles of that for your fear of automobiles to turn into the careless use of one cause this inconsiderate S. O. B. in front of you is making you late :D

I've never dealt with cyclists on winding hilly roads but i can assure you i will give them only so much of my time (that's right, i said it; "MY" time) to clear a path and allow the blocked traffic they have caused to go by and its on. hold your line cause i'm coming by, unless a sub-standard lane condition exists. For that, i'll wait :D
