2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Too few of miles?

These must be cash buyers, it would seem hard to convince a financial institution to approve $20k+ for a 12 year old truck. Banks usually seem to be removed from reality with used vehicle values. My hats off to these guys getting those types of sales, i'm just not ready to that yet haha.

I sold my 2002 3500 SLT+ Sport Cummins HO/6 speed in September 2010 (I had ordered it and took delivery in September 2001) with 46,580 miles on it (IIRC). We used it probably once a month to tow our 5th wheel RV on trips. Since it was garaged whenever not in use, it looked showroom fresh when I sold it - it brought $17,500.

prices vary due to region, fact remains in most parts they sell for a few bucks if there in decent shape mint trucks pull big money in the NW.....price a new truck or a few year old one then look at spending 15K for a truck that will actually work for you that's a bargain, I was pricing new trucks and fellas they are not cheap!

as ****** as I am fighting electrical gremlins in my truck no way I can reason spending 50k plus for a truck that may be a headache also. after reading all the forums it appears the buyers are now the new test mules for the manufactures.

My '02 has around 70k miles on it. It sits under cover in the Winter and the rest of the year I use it for camping and hauling stuff to the dump. I'm only doing around 5k per year. It has a full load and I bought it in '08 with 50k for $24k after searching for 6 months. The original owner bought it when he retired and put a camper on the back. He traded it for a new GM Duramax which died before it left the lot.

I like the styling of the 2nd gens better although lately I've had more passengers and regular rear doors would be nice.

I ought to change my sig. line. In May of last year I was sitting around 80k, and I bought it in '02 with 30k. I just rolled over 90k. I don't get to drive my work truck home anymore.

If you were looking at one and the mileage was suspect, have an independent inspection done if you don't know what all to look for.

The mileage thing doesn't concern me too bad, it was more or less the effects if it had been sitting for a while (belt, hoses, tires, etc.). The 2wd in my sig was purchased from my Dad who managed to put only 30k miles on it in 9 years. The truck I was looking at went up to $14,300 but the reserve didn't lift. That was right in a gray area for my price I had in mind. While kicking everything over during the last few days however I decided i'll just pay more for a 3rd gen. I love the 2nd gens but I don't love not having 4 full doors. There's no doubt that the prices for these trucks have remained very high, which is a good thing if you think about it. I'm going to have to go back to CA to sell this 2wd though.

Seals, old fuel, condensation in the engine, trans, axles...lot of things to deal with. First on the list would be a 100% fluid change, greasing of everything possible, followed by a fluid sample of everything at 1000 miles. Visual inspection of all the rubber parts (tires, boots, belt, bushings...).

Thanks Sticks for the insight. That's pretty much what I figured would need to be done. Really it's like anything you go and look at, regardless of miles. The hard part of buying from a dealer (aside from the markup), is you really don't get a gauge of where or how it was used. The truck in question according to the history report came from Mt. City TN which is just up the road from me. Anyway I'm going to pass on this one and keep my eyes open. An interesting side note, KBB has it valued as equipped at $25,500, I guess I better stop being shocked:-laf
