Tool suggestion?

After 150,000 miles on my front brake rotors I'm thinking I should measure the rotor thickness when I do the next pad change (soon). Anyone have a suggestion for what tool (micrometer?) to purchase, and where to purchase it, to do this job. I don't want a top of the line expensive tool; just something that will do the job.



Also, any tips on how to actually do the measurement would be appreciated.

You could use a micrometer for very accurate measurement or a vernier caliper. Mics are the most popular for machine parts as they have a tight tolerance. Some verniers can be very accurate also and some have digital readouts. I, personally would go with a micrometer.

The only problem with a vernier would be if the pads run just inside of the OD of the rotor. If that's the case, can't remember on mine, then the vernier will actually read the original thickness of the rotor due to the outer arc not having any or as much wear. Without using a mic made for rotors then the regular mic will give you a truer reading. IIRC, rotor mics read on points to better gauge thickness accounting for minor (or major) grooving. A regular mic has a flat measuring surface.

You could take them to Auto Zone or NAPA. They can measure them right in front of you, instead of buying one of your own.
