spooling up faster

After MUCH checking, anguish and realization af various complicating factors specifically relative to my year/model truck, I have reached the conclusion that for the most part I am satisfied to add only a modest power enhancement to my new truck.

To that end, it appears that the EZ would be the best "bang for the buck", as I am only interested in applying mods to the timing and boost levels on my truck, and leave fueling as it is to avoid as much as possible known problems common to lift pumps and subsequently, injector pumps when more aggressive mods are done.

Only remaining question is, what noticeable improvements in the later HO 24 valvers with 6 speeds and EZ added have been experienced in towing situations, especially in steep grades - is the expense really worth it?

What seems to be the best price, and from whom, and realizing the faint (?) possibility I might backslide later and want to add more power, is the cost difference between the boxes that are ONLY timing/boost much different from the ones that offer separate timing/fuel management? If there's no great price advantage, might as well get a box that IS capable of more potential, and not be forced to upgrade later if I get greedy...

I realize there is lots of box-related info available in the TDR, and have read much of it - but I'm particularly interested in comments from actual USERS with trucks like mine related to EZ-type timing/boost only boxes and there actual benefits in towing situations...

EZ

Gary I put an EZ on my truck and I like it. :D

Cooler EGT all so at 34 psi boost.

Now the bad news my clutch is the week link :{

I got my EZ used off the TDR classifieds at a very good price under $450

Go for it.

Good luck

Gary

Cliff is right on with his comments, My clutch proved out to be weak link so I replaced it with a Southbend Con ofe from Peter, it seams that the 6 speed clutch is a weak link to start with, after the installe of the S/B clutch I then went for the 275 injectors , I highly recommend this combo for towing, its the best, it also helped my milage too... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . I also think many others will agree

I'm sorta surprised at the clutch problems with only the single mod...

Seems there oughta be a bit more margin than THAT! Does the clutch simply begin to slip while fully engaged under load, or what?

I towed about 70,000 mi last year with an EZ. Get it, you'll love it :D . Pulling 6-12K every day. Get gauges, I could do 1300+ in the mountains, but only if I really pushed it.

Gary My truck at 11,000 miles the clutch slipped all I had at that point was a K&N air filter and straight pipe. DC replaced the clutch for free under the big W.

Now at 33,000 miles I added the EZ and I can slip the clutch under heavy load (( foot to the floor )) :D

I have read on this form a lot of 6 speeds need new clutchs :(

It looks like I am next to get a South Bend clutch Oo.

Then I will start looking for the next week link.

Get the EZ you will like it.

EZ and HO

I am going to follow this thread closely. My truck is about same as Gary's and I tow about 7700 lbs travel trailer with the slide in camper (~1300 lbs) also along for the ride sometimes. I too would like a bit more power.

My clutch seems okay for now, but I am still totally stock.

SO MAYBE 275s w/EZ? - and clutch!

I'm keeping a close eye as well. I always tow near max CGWR and have the 4:10s. I'd love just a smidgen more power or better yet, just a shift in power delivery. Some how make the 24v come on lower in the rpms like my old 12v. That's what I'd really like. That's almost more important to me than additional power. ... or so I tell myself...

Side note: I'm leaving tomorrow for Oklahoma! Sure wish I had "things" done. (e-brake, guages, wing/deflector for the front of the 5er, aux fuel tank... ) ka-ching $!

Man could I spend money!!!! :)

I have the ez and bhaf and i justed picked up a tractor today with box blade and mower. Not sure of combined weight but my truck didnt have any problem. Boost on hills was highest at 26 egt 850 to 900. I was running 65 to 72 mph and truck worked great. Knock on wood i have never slip my clutch yet and i have about 4700 miles. Truck has always ran great, cant be happier. Try the ez you will like it. :D

Yes, it's worth the expense of the EZ Box. They are going fairly cheap in the classified section now that everybody is trading up to the EZ Comp.

Get yourself the gauges to monitor your engine-

even a bone stock HO can exceed EGT's on high altitude mountain passes.

I carry around a 3200 lb. slide in camper and tow a 7500 lb. trailer all thruout the Rocky Mountain West, and the EZ box with the BHAF makes a HUGE difference. MPG is up about 1. 5, and there is NO mountain pass I can't climb at a 65 MPH cruise setting.

The EZ is the best modification you can use without tearing up the HO clutch. I've had no clutch problems at all with 20,000 miles on the truck hauling all of this stuff around. Course, I NEVER start out in 2nd gear empty or loaded, and ALWAYS take my foot off the pedal between shifts.

Based on research and input in this, and a similar thread in the 24 valve group, I've decided to try for the Edge Comp box *IF* I can use it initially without connecting the injection pump portion while still getting usable power gains from the timing/boost only portion. I've contacted Edge directly, and am waiting for their reply - have only obtained 1 price so far - $599 pluss shipping - dunno if that's good or not...

Anyway, if the Comp WILL initially function with timing/boost only, later, when I get greedy and foolish - and have done as much as possible to avoid lift pump and injector pump problems, I can CAREFULLY engage the pump enhancements as well...
