i have a 2001 quad cab short bed when pulling a 5th wheel camper it is extremely close to the cab. my question is on the new 4 door trucks can you pull a 5th wheel camper with the short bed or do you have to get a long bed

You can get a sliding fifth wheel hitch or a maybe a longer pin box. My boss' grandpa pulls a 24' 5'er with a s/b,'02. 5 Dodge 1500. Has a regular, non-sliding hitch. Just have to pay attention when turning. Depending on how your trailer is made, you might be just fine.

The 3rd gen short box is even shorter than a 2nd gen. bmoeller is right, you can get a sliding hitch, but if I was in the market for a new truck to pull a 5er, I'd get a long box.

You can have your cake and eat it too. If for some reason you want the short bed call Pullrite and have them send you the free video on the Superglide for short bed trucks.



While the long bed is the best way to go with a fiver, the Superglide provides a solution that makes pulling a fiver with a SB worry free.

As stated above you can get a slider hitch for some extra $$$, or you can be CAREFUL..... Problem with being careful is you can end up on uneven surfaces & go to turn around (Lost) & run into problem like my brother in law did.

He now has a dent in his cab. OUCH! I think his ego was damaged more than his truck, but painful none the less.

I have an RBW Lil-Rocker hitch and they are coming out with a slider. Talked to the company two weeks ago and was told they were ready to ship to dealers, so I will be looking at them also.

Here is a drawing showing different SWB/LWB 5th wheel towing combinations, and why it's important to have a sliding hitch. An extended pin box will not eliminate the possibility of hitting the cab with the trailer in tight turns. If a LWB is an option, it's a much better solution, and cheaper than an expensive sliding hitch.

And mine is longer than a LB, 25 foot with the sleeper. Now I gotta win the lottery so I can get a custom built garage to park it in. People that want to garage um don't have much choice. Mines on the road all the time so don't make much difference.
