Toyo tire failure...(Bad)!

Towing my sled puller to Logan, Ut. this past weekend I lost the tread on my right front, and separation on the left rear. These are 285/75Rx16E Toyo Open Country H/T Tuff Duty in the 10 ply. They were installed on 10-29-12 with 33 k on them and 6/32's tread left.

This was the most violent incident with a tire I have ever encountered. It was so bad it turned over my heavy ice chest in the bed. Quite a bit of damage to the right front area. I was airborne for a lifetime it seemed like, no steering wheel feel at all! Then about 300 more miles another failure on the rear, but way more gentile, broken belts but just went flat. I did make it home with the last two, needless to say they are history as soon as a new set of MasterCraft (Cooper) get here!

Wow, that sux. I know(hope)they probably addressed it, but I know several people around here who had their trucks tore up from Coopers coming apart.

I did not have a tire failure with my TOYOs but was very unhappy with tread wear. Glad you did not get hurt.

Thank you! The truck can be fixed. My son took the 2 bad tires over to Discount Tire (I didn't buy them there) and they said they would give me pro rated warrantee of $80 per tire credit towards another set of Toyo's or Michelins, I said I will take the Michelins :-laf so with the credit and my son kicked in $200 I go out the door for $600 for a new set of tires

Thank you, the weather was great, some nice trucks there. I did poor with that track, it was hard so my blunt traction tires did not hook up, they work great on a soft track.

Thanks for the heads up, that pushed me to Michelins, plus the credit they allow will put me in a set for less than the MasterCraft, so I went that route. 285/75Rx16 LTX M/S2 10 ply's.

I had the same thing happen with Toyo AT's going down the highway 79 mph felt a shudder and looked at my driver's side mirror in time to see my rear tire completely separate and take the entire driver's side of the bed and wheel well with it. Told my insurance company to give me a check and purchased a flat bed.

We had OEM TOYOs on my wife's car. I will never run them again. They started cracking at about 20k and the dealer said there was nothing they could do. Toyo wouldn't do anything either. According to the dealer, the tire dates of manufacture were two years older than the car. That means they sat somewhere for two years before they were ever installed. Toyo nor Nissan would take any responsibility. We changed the tires and shortly after traded the vehicle. If you are inclined to buy them, check the manufacture date and don't buy any over a few months old.

Les Schwab uses TOYO as their primary tire source here in eastern Oregon, probably at all their locations. Last set of the TOYOs was only the rear tires, and most miles were towing our 5th wheel RV. I got over 40K miles on those tires, and the OEM Michelins were gone at about 30K miles - replacement TOYOs still looked good for about another 10-15K miles, but I wanted a different tread design, so kept one of the old TOYOS for my spare, and new TOYOS on all 4 wheels. Manufacture dates for the new tires was only a month prior to installing them - mine are load range E4, dunno what the "4" means. Dunno why the OEM Michelins wore out so quickly, but no other issues with them, and if Les Schwab sold Michelins, I may well have bought them instead of the TOYOS - Michelins seem to have the best reputation for tires - dunno what the latest issue may be with TOYO, but my tires were bought a couple of years ago, so perhaps some later manufacturing or materials changes are the cause. So far so good with my TOYOs...

Nick, What is the load rating on your Toyo's tires?

When I was looking for new summer towing tires for my truck; I ended up with a set of Nitto Dura Grappler tires LT285/70R/17 126R. Not much out there for 17" tires that will fit my truck. I see that you have 16" tires but I am just curious?

Jim, the Toyo's are rated 3750 lbs and Q speed or 99mph. The new one's are the same weight rating with S speed or 106 mph.

Glad you're not hurt.
I've had great luck with Michelins. On my 3rd set. They seem to last me about 60K miles. I'm very easy on them, virtually no towing or heavy loads.
The only thing I don't like is they seem to get sidewall cracks quite early.

Well THAT explains it…OP should be able to get at least FOUR replacements, not just $80 per tire!!!

Dang, TDR and brods to the rescue again!! The recall for my exact tire includes tires made from 5108 through 4211, mine are 3311 or 9 weeks inside the recall dates for free replacement according to the article. I will be all over thisOo. Thank you brods!! I will keep this updated.
