toyota landcruiser diesels

I have the chance to purchase a 82 toyota landcruiser diesel from a fellow I work with. The thing seems to run great, doesn't miss a beat. It has the typical import pop can thin sheet metal body that is full of rust. I want the truck to commute to work and save the miles on my 95 CTD. Don't really care about the rusty body, but want to make sure the driveline is sound. Has anyone had any experiences with these before? As with most Toyotas, the body goes long before the engine/driveline.

Turbo or not? I had a naturally aspirated diesel Toyota pickup. It was an easy keeper but what a slug. About the only thing it would pass was a VW diesel Vanagon. I did have syncro problems with the transmission. Too much torque, ha!

No turbo. I had a 81 datsun b-210 that had better acceleration! He put new rear springs in the rear, new injectors, did the brakes, newer tires, glow plugs, has a hitch. Its a four speed- not exactly a speed machine but he still gets 25mpg all for 2000 bucks canadian. not a bad deal I think.

I could get up to 40mpg with the one I had doing highway miles. I sold it with somewhere over a hundred on the odometer. I saw that truck on the road for several years afterwards.

if you don't buy it I will! I have a 73 gasser that i'd love to convert. Its in much better shape, very little rust. I have it torn down, now i'm speculating on what to do. Keep it stock or V8, diesel, 1 ton axles? where to stop... .
