My truck has been having a hard time deciding whether to lock up or not. After it locks up if I get on the pedal gently it comes right out. Normally it would only come out if I got on the pedal hard.

I had similar problem with My 1994 and took it to dealer who said they replaced TPS. If TPS is the problem can I replace myself?

I will try cleaner fix tomorrow but if that doe not work is it safe to say that if I just replace the sensor it will cause more problems since it will needs to be adjusted? Unfortunatley I dont have any meters.

well, a cheap meter at your local pawnshop or walmart is probably $20. have you tried pulling the wires (3 of them) out of the harness back about 3-4 feet??

You can also go to DTT site and get an electrical noise filter. I don't have one myself, but I understand it to have the same effect as what shendren is speaking of. Options, Options, Options!!!;)

To read about the noise filter, go to DTT's site at http://www.dieseltrans.com/ Click on the forums and tech tips button in the lower left corner of the screen and then click on noise filter. Like I said, I don't have one, but if Bill K. has researched this as a possible solution for the symptoms he describes, I have to believe it will work in most cases.

Been about 2 weeks now and after spraying electrical contact cleaner problem is gone hot or cold weather, been reading of others with problem not so easily solved guess i lucke out.

his noise filter didn't help my situation. i left it hooked up and ran 2 shielded wires for the signal and power. just brought the truck back to florida today. ran flawlessly... ...

It works for me also. Over 200k on the stock TPS. I had trouble around 20k but once I started spraying the TPS at every oil change no more problem.

I think Scott must have some stray electrons under his hood coming from elsewhere that have caused all his problems.

Glad he finally got it now (I hope) :)

I did the contract cleaner spray thing on my 95. It stopped it for the most part, but every once in a while it would pop up. Always seemed to happen on the same place on the freeway on my way home - right at the Ohio-Pa line - mysterious electron field?

Anyway, I learned that whenever it decided to act up and unlock the TC at highway speeds, I just rapidly pushed the pedal to the floor and off all the way about 3 times. After that it worked fine. Maybe that movement cleaned up the inside of the TPS? I just know it worked.

Good luck.

Blake, I think what you are seeing is that the tps acts up more at the position it sees most, for instance 65 mph if that's where you normally cruise. It's probably due to dirt getting mashed into the contacts at the place it rests most. I know when mine messed up just adjusting my throttle up or down a couple mph was all it took to make it stop hunting.

Ok. I am going to jump in here also.

Ran over 1200 miles this past weekend and had the same problems. Jumping and hunting for lock and unlock in OD. Didn't think it was the transmission in any way because it would ONLY act up on flat ground when I was ever so lightly letting off on the go pedal.

My question is, WHERE is the TPS and WHAT am I looking for to try and clean it ??

It is on the drivers side of injection pump. It is where the throttle cable ends up and is square with four bolts. I just sprayed it all down.

Yes, I am still having problems. It seems to have been getting steadily worst, but the last 200 miles, it hasn't done it once. Will try and clean it this afternoon. Have to go for another 200 miler tonight. Then I shall see if it is still looking.

every time mine acted up it got continually worse until something had to be done. until the last time when i finally cut the wires and fixed it...
