I posted regarding the best location of the trans temp sender unit and have been told, and rightly so, that the pressure ports are not a good location for this sender. I agree that the cooler out line is probably the best location, even better than the pan, but it seems to require another $50 to $80 for a manifold. I suppose that I could figure out some way to cut, flare and install my own brass tee that allows a sender to be installed but was wondering if there was a better way. So my question is this, I have a 2001. 5 47RE and it has a temerature pickup for the PCM to guage fluid temp. It is installed in the governor body and i wanted to know if this could be tapped for a voltage that would drive an electric guage? Or would it mess with the voltage sent to the PCM? Thanks in advance for the help.
 
Just buy the $80-$100 replacement output line from the transmission to the cooler on the pax side of the engine and put it there... that is the best and most accurate spot to see fluid temp changes and to really judge how hard your transmission is working.



If you wanna get real crazy, put one in the pan too the next time you have it off and run a switch to a single gage so you can switch between the two... my bet is that you'll be watching the output line way more than the pan temps...
 
Thanks Snow, I may indeed do what you suggest, I'm just trying to see if there is a way to acheive the same results without having to spend another $50 to $80 on this. The idea of the dual senders is something I may do, I have an extra sender unit.
 
One thing you are going to run into is the chance of blowing apart any brass manifold you cut and flare into the stock line WHEN you upgrade your power and therefore your transmission.



I bought the brass manifold when I first put my transmission temp sender in and then 1 month later I had my transmission built. When they do that they up the line pressure considerably (all companies do). My builder would not warranty my transmission w/ the brass manifold and I totally agreed with him. Now that I'm running almost 200 psi on two of my WOT shifts, I wouldn't trust that thing at all! Save some money the first time and do it right... learn from my mistake (and others)... that's what we're here for
 
Snow your point is made, i certainly don't want any problems with my planned upgrades. Thanks for the warning, I have learned much from this forum and take all of the experiences stated here seriously. So it seems my last chance is that factory temp sender, if it is usable I will try that, if not I think the best path would be the manifold line.
 
Put it where you can now. Something is better than nothing, just keep in mind that you will not be monitoring the hottest fluid. Perhaps you can upgrade to the line with port later.
