You guys with gauges; what types of temps do you average while towing. I upgraded my tc and valve body + synthetic fluid and added gauges(pyro, boost and trans temp)last fall. I was recovering from neck surgery @ the time and was unable to do any towing. Every thing went well until the 1st time I towed (1st week of April) and the trans began to hunt under heavy losds like pulling a hill. Had my PCM reflashed and that solved that problem. Up until then my trans temp never went above 150deg. Now I am seeing higher temps sooner but not over 200deg yet.

My truck is a '96. I take the temperature at the hot line going to the cooler. Towing a 13. 5K fifth wheel my temperature rarely exceeds 150. The only time I exceed 200 is while parking the fiver going back and forth.

arar,
So far I've only been on one long tow, (900 miles round trip) and my AT gauge sat just below 150'. It was also in April going from Mass. to Pa. In some traffic and backing into a site (three tries for leveling) I saw 185'.
I was amazed to see how the AT temp drops when the transmission is locked up. Good luck and many miles of towing and camping!

HMMmmm - interesting subject, since *I* just installed a temp guage in my early '91 with the plain 3-speed 727. I am seeing about 150 degrees out on the freeway at speed, about 180 around town in stop and go driving. This is with plain AT fluid, and I am expecting a new double-deep transmission pan any day now. I'd like to take a run into the hills pulling our 5er before I switch to the new pan, since it claims to lower temp by 30 degrees, but don't know if I'll be able to delay the install long enough... Seems like you guys with the later trucks hold quite a bit lower temps than I will be seeing...

The "99" suto I was running last fall with the new 5ver would run just under 150 degrees until I started pull long grades. transmission would slip some and heat up to about 175 degrees. I had my sensor in a Mag-Hytek pan.

I not longer have to monitor transmission temps. Good luck and happy camping.

I wonder what transmission temps at the fluid line out to the cooler users are seeing when towing a decent grade with 8000 lbs or so? Especially older trucks with no converter lockup. I'll be surprised if mine stays much below 220 degress or so...

We have a 96 and like Dieselnerd, transmission temp runs between 125 - 150 while towing. Probe inserted in Mag-Hytec transmission pan. Temps get up to 175 when manuvering trailer into shed/campsite.

Usually never over 150. Towed 35,680 lb load (combined weight) from Driscoll to Houston on Tuesday and Temps never got over 180. 131,000+ miles and still pulls great.

Hot Shot,
What's the combined weight rating of your 3500? The reason I ask is that I recently attended a seminar and the speaker cautioned us to not exceed the combined weight rating when towing a trailer. He said if you get in an accident, the other parties lawyer will try to hang you and probably succeed if you over the limit.
