These NP205's are sticky SOBs. My Ramcharger's 203 I can shift with one finger, but my diesel's 205 more often takes a little bit of muscle. Sometimes you have better luck unlocking the hubs first, then popping the transfer case out of 4wd. It also helps to be rolling when you shift (DON'T ROLL AND SHIFT OUT OF 4 LOW!!!). Just let off the brakes and as it starts rolling push forward and toward the steering wheel until it pops. If that doesn't work tap the accelerator a little bit to help relieve the pressure against those gears. If that still won't do it, often times doing it in reverse is easier than forward. In either case, if you go too far and hit neutral on the transfer case, if you have an automatic transmission, you'll need to shut it off to get it back in gear unless your rolling at least 10mph.

My buddy was a little dissappointed going from his Ramcharger to his diesel at how hard they are to shift sometimes. He soaked the shifter linkage in WD40 every day for a week, then covered it in some heavy weight grease. It helped a little, but its still just a hard t-case to muscle.

When the transfer case is out of the truck and you don't have all those linkages on it you literally have to use a rubber mallet to shift it. I rebuilt mine myself and thought i put the forks in wrong because i couldn't' shift it. I figured a freshly rebuilt transfer case should shift pretty easily, well I was wrong.

to the original poster: what do you mean you "don't have 2wd or 4lo"? Do you mean you can't get the transfer case into those gears, or your tcase doesn't work when its in those gears? Is the tcase clunking or doing anything out of the ordinary? Did you drain the oil and check it for metal?

I have a simular problem with mine as well .

It has 2 Hi and 4 Hi no 4 lo

One i hate the that ignorant gated shifter its junk ,

Im not shure if its a bent shifter fork or ?

I had it off when my rear end went then it took the transmission as well .

I wonder if its a dent shifter fork ?

Has any body came up with a diffrent shifter ora 2 stick set up yet ?

There are twin stick kits all over the place for the NP205. Google it, I'm sure you'll find at least 20 different hits. There are also instructions for modifying your stock shift rails to set up for twin sticking, then just buy another lever and build a bracket.

I've been thinking for a while that I want to just make up a longer shift lever for my diesel. At the expense of my passenger's comfort, I think the added leverage might help a little bit. My Ramcharger's transfer case shift lever comes halfway up the dash, which I'm sure is part of why it's a little easier to shift, but mainly its just the different t-case. I believe the 203 is chain driven, which tend to shift like butter no matter what vehicle theyre in.

Most of the twin shifter kits are mostly just brackets for the two shifters. All you really have to do to make your 205 a twin sticked transfer case is take out the two "pills" that ride in between the two shifter rods. That lets you shift the two forks independently of each other.

Yes, chain driven t-cases are a lot easier to shift! my np231 was soooo much easier to shift than my 205. The problem is chain driven t-cases aren't nearly as strong as a 205, thats why they are mostly in 1/2 tons. The np241 is a really beefed up transfer case to handle the Cummins in later models.

My buddy has a 97 1500, so it has the chain driven style transfer case, and he doesnt have the problem where if you put the case in neutral, you have to shut off the truck to pop it back in gear. Something about that thing, it'll shift in and out in any situation and any circumstance with the flick of your wrist.

i have 2 hi and 4 hi now but still no 4 lo this saturday i'll have it up on the lift so i''l fool with the linkage and see if that my problem. thank you for all your replies
