Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Transmission Experts, a few questions for you.

I'm hoping a few people on here are familar with the inner workings of the 47RE.



The problem I have is that it goes into gear pretty hard. Instead of a nice smooth engagement, it's more like BAM... in gear. Either forward or reverse. It's done this since I bought it, and it's pretty annoying and I'm sure it's pretty hard on the entire driveline.



I'm doing a fluid/filter change pretty soon, so it'd be easy for me to pull the valve body and change parts if that's all it is.



2nd question I have, does anyone know who would carry a resuable filter? I have on in my Jeep, it's a fine brass screen that I just spray out with brake clean. Looking to find one for the truck.



3rd question. Are the 727 pans the same as the 47RE? I'm looking for a deep transmission pan, and it's easy to find 727 ones.

Check your band adjustment. That can be a cause of harsh engagement. Other causes can be the pressure too high and the tv cable out of adjustment. If the problem doesn't go away when you adjust the bands, check the pressure and see how high it is at idle.

One other cause can be a low stall converter. Has the converter been replaced?



Your 47re pan is deeper than the pan from Summit, but the bolt pattern is the same.

So a deep 727 holds less than a stock 47RE pan?



The bands were adjusted correctly by me when I first got the truck and afterwards as well and it didn't help. The convertor is a rebuilt unit, nothing special done to it.

Cant speak to your shift harshness but there are deep pans out there. Not familiar with the summit pan but maghytec makes one for sure. They have a deep and a double deep. There are others out there as well.

Yeah I know about Mag Hytec, but I can't afford to spend $300 on a transmission pan. I was hoping the $55 Summit one would do the trick. I'll buy another stock pan and weld the 2 together before I spend that kind of money!

I'm not looking for the pan to hold gallons, but 2 quarts over stock would be more than adequate.



With the aluminum pans, what do you guys do to attach the magnet? I'd be worried it'd move around in there and possible get into something.



Another question I have... the truck starts off in 2nd gear and they as I give it throttle, it will go into 1st... What controls that?



Really the transmission would need to be pulled out and gone through, as the it wasn't a very good rebuild, but I don't have the $$ right now.

You may be better off with a better trans cooler then a deeper pan, trans cooler will work a lot better on keeping temps down, i think your trans is normal going into gear, mine did the same before and after the DTT.

No it's not normal. I drove an 01 a few days ago and it was nothing like mine.



Not worried about cooling, just want more fluid in the system.

You might want to try a governor pressure transducer and solenoid for the taking off in second, they do some funky things when they start to go bad. Not sure on the harsh engagement

Does anyone have info on the pans? From what I'm guessing, a 2 quart "over stock" 727 pan is the same as a stock 47RE. I'd like if someone could say yes/no to that.



I can get a Summit brand 727 aluminum pan for about $100, which is 2 qts over stock... or I found a B&M pan which is 4 quarts over... looks to be a 47RE deep pan, so like 2 quarts over 47RE size for $136. It's hard to say for sure looking at the pics.



I'm sure the Mag Hytec pans are nice, but a pan is a pan, right? For me, as long at is doesn't leak and holds more than stock, that's all I need. My stock steel pan is bent and twisted enough that it's hard to get it to seal, so I figure kill 2 birds with 1 stone.





Suncoast sells a valve body for $400, I might just get that. It'd be one step in making the transmission half-way decent.

Nate- I bought a B&M 727 aluminum pan for my old Ram. (46RE) Had to machine some of the inner fins off to clear the solenoid. Attempted to install on my '99 47RE and found that all the inner fins would need to come off. I think I'll save it for my '67 Charger. The volume of the B&M is quite a bit more on the 727 but about the same as the 47RE. The exterior fins and drain plug are a plus though! Mike

Nate- I bought a BD deep pan from Jegs paid 249. 99 + shipping 9. 99 but that was on 3/23/05. Got the new catalog now is 279. 99 + shipping. No problems at all perfect fit, it has a magnetic drain plug and a fitting for trans temp sending unit.

Says it fits 518 transmission. Is that same one you got?

I've got the B&M on my '94, not as much electrical stuff on the VB though. It was cheapest at AutoZone ($125 or so).



The RH's had the shallowest pans (same as old 727's). RE's are 2 deeper (2 quarts), the B&M's are deeper than the RE's by another 2 quarts.



As for the hard shifting, if there was a replacement converter installed, someone might have put in a Trans-go shift kit. About all they do is make the trans shift harder. I'm on my 3 trans and have been down that road before other stuff was available. The fix is to reduce the hole dia in the seperator plate. How do you do that? Install an aluminum rivet (drive type) and drill it smaller or buy a new seperator plate. But that might affect other holes you don't want to mess with.



Call Dave Goerend at Goerend Brothers, he'll help you out (answer questions, etc). He helped me out quite a bit many years ago before I bought any parts from him. Install the new Dodge pan gasket while you're in there, they're reusable and don't leak. (he has those and good quality filters too)

In terms of valve body's, is there one that's better than the others? I don't want to start a transmission war, I'm just looking for feedback... I was thinking Suncoast, anything negative on them??



Probably do this next month so I can allow some $$ for it.



I think I'll try out the B&M or TCI pan and I'll let you guys now. I might buy that and 1 for the RE and just return the RE pan if the 727 pan works.
