any ideas about why a hi milage D T T transmission gets rebuilt by a local shop and fails twice by slippage and wiping out the clutches. went in the shop with irratic lockup. replaced all worn parts and after a short trip with lockup working, tran failed with burnt clutches. back to the shop and found out that one of the soleniods had a broken spring and case. replaced with new soleniods and other parts in V. B. back on the road and after a 500 mile trip

with no lockup. got the lockup to work by rotating the tps clockwise a bit

and it worked for about 30 miles only to stop working. tran started to slip and it looks like the clutches are out again. at the same shop now, is the 3rd time around charm or stupid  ? Stormy

The clutches have to have sufficient line pressure to keep from slipping, sounds like low pressure for one thing. There are lots of knowledgible folks on here, hopefully some of them will chime in. bg

If I remember correctly, DTT adds an extra clutch plate in the trans*. If they made room for it by maching out the cages that hold them together, you'll never get a standard clutch set to work.

This is the clutch pack in the trans, not the extra TC clutch plates.

transmission

I believe it is the P C M failing. it seems that the transmission failed after getting it to lockup, both times. we will check further. stormy

When you state "clutches", which clutch pack(s) are you referring to?

Do you have an aux trans cooler? If so, is it a single or multi-pass? If it's single, was it flushed, if it's multi - was it replaced? Was the factory trans cooler flushed - preferably with a pulse flush machine? (same for the aux cooler).

Do you have a transmission gauge? What were the temps?

Not looking at it, only going by the very little info you have here - could be on overheating issue, line pressure issue, etc. but my initial reaction was overheating.

transmission

Checked out line pressure, all ok. got it narrowed down to possible torque converter failure. a D T T with about 700,000 miles on it. time for new ? stormy

The TC will be full of junk like a cooler would be. See what it will cost to swap you for a new one. It should be cheaper than a new TC, they have to cut it open, clean it, replace the clutches, and weld it back up. You already have the machined cover and extra plates.

So, you are telling me that a trans shop rebuilt your transmission and never replaced the converter? If you didn't specifically tell them to do this, they are inept! If you did tell them not to do this and they didn't tell you why it should be done - again - they are inept!

Would make me seriously wonder what else they cheapened out on and didn't check/replace?

Extreme1 is correct in what needs to be done to rebuild them. Most shops don't have that ability and they farm them out to rebuilders. However I have received a few that were not welded back together correctly and/or balanced correctly. No fun when you get to diagnose and pull the trans again for "free".

I guess I am partially at fault. the T C question was brought up and discussed as to replacement. a custom d t t should be ok was the answer. I agreed and prior to going to the shop tran worked fine except for the no lock up issue.

Will fine out today if it's the t c. I think a stock one off the shelf should work

as I don't pull trailers anymore and hardley ever really use WOT. stormy

transmission

now it seems after pressure tests everything ok as to line pressure. next step

is to examine the overdrive and see if thet is the problem. it is the original

O D assy and has many miles of hard towing. about 200 thousand miles ago

a big ring in the overdrive broke and was replaced, I don't know if this even had anything to do with the present problem or not. we will find out. stormy

OK, now you really have me confused or I didn't read something correctly.

It is a rebuild transmission yet "it is the original O D assy and has many miles of hard towing... " So they didn't rebuild the OD assy?!??!?

I'm sooooo confused.

Put it in a box and send it to DTT.

This is probably the best suggestion, but if they replaced some parts in the VB already, this would have me worried. That's the problem with custom valve bodies and shift kits. It is nearly impossible to tell what someone else has done, making it nearly impossible to get right without starting from scratch.
