Travis,

Replace the transmission output shaft speed sensor which is located on the outside of the overdrive gear case. It's an inexpensive part that should be available at your favorite auto parts store for less than $20. It literally takes 5 minutes to replace.

Please post back here and let us know if that worked.

Thanks,

John L.

Ahh... subtract 10 points for withholding information!

Yes. A failed governor pressure SENSOR and/or governor pressure SOLENOID can cause strange shifting behavior or no shifts. Other electrical and mechanical problems could be the cause also.

When the governor pressure sensor in my transmission failed, the transmission would start out in 2nd gear and sometimes wouldn't shift into 4th.

If you're going to drop the pan again, definitely replace both the governor pressure sensor and the solenoid. You can buy them online for a good price here:

Wait...

Travis,

Are you saying the transmission was working fine UNTIL you adjusted the bands and cleaned the governor pressure solenoid?

If yes, please tell me more about this...

How did you clean the solenoid and why did you?

How did you adjust the bands? Did you follow the service manual and what torque did you use to tighten the set screws before backing them off?

Did you adjust the front band with the pan off the transmission?

Thanks,

John L.

yes the trans worked but it had delayed shifts, the solenoid is reallys easy to clean just bend the four tabs to get it apart and clean it with brake clean but be careful their is a really tiny bb that is easy to loose, the band adjustments were done acordingly to oe specs

If you're absolutely sure there's nothing wrong with the front band... as in the front band strut didn't break or fall out, then at this point I'd replace both the governor pressure sensor and solenoid.

A broken front band (or missing strut) will prevent a shift to second gear.

Good luck,

John L.

You might get away with that once but not on a regular basis. Mostly you will never get away with it. Check your gov pressure, bet it ain't rising like it is supposed to.

Replace the gov solenoid and transducer. They are only good for about 40k.

ive cleaned hundreds of those solenoids and have yet to find a bad one,

If it has more than 40k guaranteed its bad, and, they are frequently bad out of the box. Thats why there is 2 different replacements for them.

When you run the gov pressure test and watch the rise and drop its obvious. You may clean them but thats not the biggest issue with them. The coil is undersized and just flat wears out after a while. They will intemittently not work and cause issues.

In a transmission that MUST rely on them to work correctly they are a big FAIL. Toss it and start with new or a better unit.
