triple axle tire change

Whats the best way to raise a triple to change a tire. Will my cresent shaped wedge that I used on my old tandem work? Thanks for any ideas.

I always carry a 3 ton floor jack when I'm towing. It has been to both the left and right coast, and to many places in-between, In all the miles we've traveled I have only used it twice. But each time it made the tire change a little bit less of a pain.



We only have a double axle trailer. I imagine it would work as well on the center axle on a triple.

When I repacked the bearings on my 5er (two axle) I just ran the wheel that I wasn't working on up on a ramp made of about 4 2x10s. This left the wheel that I was working on hanging from the suspension.



This does a couple of things for me: first, since it is connected to the truck and three trailer wheels are still bearing the weight of the trailer it is a lot more stable than just jacking it, and second, it allows you to access the brake adjuster slot.



I realize that if you are changine a tire on the side of the road that you will have the truck hooked to the trailer anyway and you don't have a need to access the brake adjuster, but if I ever have to change a tire I will use this method.

I have a 40' Alfa Gold triple axle and working on the tires and wheels is not too bad unless you are on the shoulder of a busy freeway. The trailer is too heavy (GVWR 18,000) to try and pull up on anything so I just carry a 4 ton hydraulic jack. It is not too bad unless it is the center axle then it is tougher to get to. I have had to change two tires but luckily both were on the rear axle. Get a set of coveralls as you will be crawling around under the trailer to get your jack set.

On my Avion I jack up the whole side with a good bottle jack that way you don't put to much pressure on one axle. This has worked well on 2 34ft ers. It helps to put the landing gear down and be hitched to the tow,your trailer has a harder time moving when jacked up. See you on the road safe travels

Thanks for the ideas guys. I think Ill go the jack route and maybe throw in a couple jack stands for extra safety.

We have a triple axle Royals International Homestead. I just brought a 12 ton jack from wal-mart last week for $30. 00. It may be over kill but sure jacks up that Royals in a hurry.

I have a 32' Kountry Star fifth wheel, which is made by Newmar. It has tandem Dexter axles and weighs about 11,500 lbs. The info from both Newmar and Dexter axle indicates that you should not jack under the axle on the trailer, even at the extreme outer edges. Why, I don't know but they are very clear in saying not to jack under the axle. One fella told me that it would mess up the alignment if you lifted it under the axle. Before I took delivery of the trailer, I bought a small portable three ton floor jack thinking I would use it. But, even a commercial two and one half ton floor jack will not go high enough to lift the trailer at the frame. Just packed the wheel bearings and used a bottle jack on a block of wood and lifted on a support welded to the frame that the suspension is mounted to. Seemed secure. Guess what I am saying is you might check with the manufacturer to find the lift points. Apparently you can lift some at the axle and some you cannot.
