12' Veri Lite Camper

Morning, I have a 93 W-250 and travel with a 9 1/2' S&S cabover that weighs 3100#'s. What have you guys found to control the truck roll the best with cabover's in the bed??

I also travel with a 9 1/2ft S&S on my 2500. Before the 2500 I hauled the S&S with a '93 W250. I probably could answer your question, but I don't understand what you mean by "truck roll"

I believe you are refering to what is commonly known as sway. If so, my vote is for Rancho RS9000x adjustable shocks on max dampening for better sway control.

Dave

Yes, I do mean sway. I have the RS9000's and have them set on 5 in back and 4 up front when loaded. Maybe the sway that I have is acceptable for the truck without air bags or sway bars and of course, only two wheels in back.

Are air bags part of a "standard" necessary package to add to the truck when using a cabover??

Rich

Well it wasnt a Dodge but I installed Air bags on a 3/4 ton Ford that I had when I started hauling a 11. 5' Dreamer that weighed 3000 lbs and it sure removed a lot of sway and made cornering a lot more stable, I would recomend them highly.

This outfit don't sway, but it has Rancho 9000 Shocks on the back. My '93 didn't sway and it didn't even have the shocks. No Dam air bags either. If your Camper hold downs are fastened to the bed, maybe the bed is swaying. Its mounted to the truck on rubber.

I would invest in a sway bar (preferably a HD aftermarket one) before I would buy air bags. I am not anti-air bag, but in my opinion (and others, apparently), air bags are more useful for load leveling than sway control and adding them can worsten sway problems, depending on pressure used. Too much pressure and you raise the load off of the factory springs. This negatively impacts sway control. I ended up going with a custom 5 leaf overload pack. With my sway bar, ranchos maxed, and custom springs, she handles very well with my 2714 lb camper. Nonetheless, nothing beats the stability of a dually! Oh, well, next truck.

P. S. I am firmly in the "mount the camper to the frame" camp!

My 2 cents.

My camper is secured with the Stable lift system, it has a cradle that worm drives up to an anchor to the bottom of the frame.

I understand what you mean by the air bags... ... . hopefully I can find a sway bar for the "old" '93 trucks????

Rich:confused:

Rich,

I have the stable-lift system on my camper, too. I think I was one of the first ones to get one, back in 93. I have only ever seen about two others on the road. I have the camper package on my truck, which includes a sway bar. Between the Rancho's and the sway bar, it's pretty solid, now. Hope you can find one.

Jim

Yea, what they said.

I recently purchased a 9 1/2' S&S for my 2500. Even with the Skyjacker lift kit and 35" tires, my add a leaf, sway bar and RS 9000's control the load nicely. I also custom built a frame mount similar to the Tork lift set-up that is rock solid. Was considering the air bags, but after driving with the camper on I see no need. Besides, I've heard a lot of mixed opinions on the air bags. :D
