Today we were pulling our 5th wheel (12500 pounds) from Little Rock to a camp ground on the lake in Rogers AR (243 miles). The truck did good until we pulled off the freeway at Rogers. Apparently when we stopped at a light it went into limp mode (stuck in 4th) and I didn't know it as there was no check engine light. I new it was sluggish taking off but being in traffic didn't pay attention to that. (For the whole trip up to this point the trans temp never got over 170 degrees. I drove with it in tow/haul mode between 60-65 mph.) We were about 12 miles from the campground at this point. As we went along in traffic I noticed the trans temp climbing to 220 and then to near 240. It would go down some but come back up. When we got out of traffic on the hilly road to the campground I tried to manually shift the transmission and that's when I saw it wouldn't come out of 4th. The check engine light came on finally. Up hills I could tell it was slipping a lot, so I finally pulled over, shut the engine off and then restarted it. Now it would shift from 1-2-3-4 but I could tell it was still slipping and temp was running around 230. When I pulled into the campground and stopped I could smell the hot transmission. I let it cool by the gate while I took my motorcycle and found our campsite (up and down hills in the park). Reloaded the motorcycle and towed the trailer to the campsite. After I let it cool at the campsite an hour I checked the fluid and it was dirty and had a slight burned smell.
I need to find a good transmission shop in Rogers, Arkansas that can work on the 68rfe as I am basically stuck at the campground with only the motorcycle and only have camp reserved thru Sunday night, but can extend a couple days. If anyone knows of one call me at 501-920-5642.
