I had an '09 Ram 4500 cab chassis with an Aisin and I ran a Smarty 6.7 adding 90 HP and 180 Lb Ft of Tq. That 68C Aisin had a max Tq rating of 730 Lb Ft and I put almost 70K miles on it with 790 Lb Ft of Tq. It was a tow beast. Had minimal Tq management. Only reason I traded it was it was only rated GCVWR of 26K Lbs and I was 33.4K lbs. My new 5500 has max Tq management and that 2-3 second delay when giving giving hard throttle. I played a lot with it the last few days and best technique is to roll into it and after it shifts to second roll into it harder. I liked my 4500 better for turning into traffic, but will make this work. Just act like you are hooked up to your trailer when driving solo and no problems, hopefully. Take care, Ron

Have a 2018 with Aisin and 4.10 gears . Had some work done .
Now 445 hp 1050 torque .
No throttle lag , feels like pedal directly connected to engine . Only use top 1/4" of travel when unloaded , About the same when loaded .

From what I read on the tuning forums, the Aisin has no real tuning support. It also doesn't like extra HP. Great transmission, but only if left stock. the 68 isn't a great transmission, but can be built well (with a lot of $) an has a lot of tuning options. This is one of the main reasons I would not get a Aisin if I were buying a new truck now.

I'm pretty sure there are options for aftermarket support: https://revmaxconverters.com/product-category/transmissions/transmissions-dodge-diesel/. It's expensive, but then again so are the aftermarket options for the 68RFE.

The Aisin still lacks true transmission tuning, but given enough time I'm sure someone will crack that.

Can't speak to the so-called lag issue some associate with the Aisin. I wouldn't be surprised if FCA built in some torque management on a truck that is producing +900lb-ft. With that said, that truck also saw extensive testing, by FCA and 3rd party groups (regulators, journalists, non-profit consumer groups). If the lag was truly bad to the point of being a safety issue in traffic, I'd certainly expect to see more literature on that....but I don't.

People who say that the Aisin isn't robust I think are likely to be tuners who modify their trucks for outright performance but disregard the OEM's design specifications and longevity standards. Any transmission can be broken if the OEM specs are exceeded. And quite a few few driveline bits (axle shafts, transfer case, differentials, ect.) are vulnerable at increased power levels...but most tuners don't care about that stuff. They're looking for high horsepower and they're willing to rebuild whatever gets broken along the way.

In stock configuration or moderately modified, the Aisin seems to be as stout as anything else out there for hard work and towing.
